(First Reef Tank Ever) **** 600gal Display **** 1300gal System

My limited understanding of skimmers is that you do NOT want to actually "CLEAN" them if You "CLEAN" them they will have to go back through a break in phase again... The most that I have ever done or been advised to do is to rinse out the towers and body...I'll even run a wet towel through BUT if you do a heavy cleaning the skimmer wont work well for a few days..

Cleaning the PUMPS however is another matter.. they need regular, complete cleanings

there's probably some truth to that. I use the heavy cleaning when the thing is just all coraline. Otherwise a toilet brush and paper towel is good enough.

also diluted about 1:4...honestly, I don't measure it. I just our it in and have at it. Vinegar will not harm you tank per se, but a good rinse is adequate. I just rinse it out and be done with it.

Muriatic on the other hand, is much more of an issue, but it does a sweet job if you are in a hurry. Because most skimmers are so big, I would just use a rubbermaid, pour a gallon of vinegar in and fill with water. then place the skimmer in it for a day, and flip it over for a second day.

Any harm in running full strength vinegar on pumps? I recently cleaned my Tunzes in undiluted vinegar. Calcium deposits loosened fairly quickly (~30 minutes). Then I rinsed well before re-installing.

so pretty much removed the all pumps, soaked needle wheel and clean any debris inside pump. also i keep a mag float inside skimmer body for bi-weekly cleaning.

I've completely cleaned my skimmer every 6 months. And it always kicks right back in within 6 hours of running. Maybe Euroreef doesn't need a break-in period. Or maybe my tank is so filthy, the skimmer cooperates immediately. :D

I also completely clean the skimmer about every 6 months. I break it down and check all the parts and then fill the skimmer with 10:1 of muriatic acid and water. I run it for 15 minutes with the acid and water mix. Then a good rinse before I reattach it to the system. It starts producing again in minutes just like when I do my weekly wipe downs.

any deltec user out there, ok so pretty much removed all pumps and cleaned them thoroughly and re attached them. im pretty sure the deltec doesn't need to be broken in again right :D.

not much work have been done lately to my display since i have ton of house projects going on especially the fence job PITA right at 270'. still debating on how much more flow i will need considering the 2 CL w/OM 4way, 2 waveboxes and returns is not catching all the dead spots i have. so here's what i was thinking of, 2 more 6201's, 4 6201's, 4 6101's with 7095.

4x6201 with 7095 controller, dual waveboxes will do the work. You can have your CL on timer and run it couple hrs a day just to blow detritus off the rock...

yeah CL for detritus for few hrs isn't bad idea. would this harm the pumps in anyway considering they will be turn on and off? how would i position the 6201's pumps and placement for waveboxes also?

I would put the waveboxes on one end flow across the length, 2 tunze on each end on interval 2. If you turn it on and off for few hrs a day. I don't think it would harm the pump. As long as you don't put it on some kind on interval like 3hrs on, 1hr off throughout the day....

This sunds right. I would onlz have it czcle once a daz to save the pumps.

funny, my 96x48x30 tank is setup this exact way, 4 6200's all on end end pointing down the length of the tank, they alternate back and forth for about 10 seconds each pair, then I have 2 waveboxes on the same end and i have a hammerhead on a closed loop with 6 returns dropping down from the top. I leave the CL on 24 hours though.
I have never seen any detritus on the rocks or sand or anywhere.

With the tunze system I can place corals somewhat near the pump outlets and they are ok, with a closed loop as powerful it would blow the tissue off my SPS so i am a big fan of the Tunze system.

Heres a picture of the "wall o tunzes" LOL $3,000 worth hehe

great setup Chris, what is use to hold the tunze in place? also what's up with magnet cleaner small outside and large piece inside.

reefkoi, sweet teaser pic. do you have a build thread? :) Dang, you and Steve are gonna have nice tanks in Colorado!
