J, i doubt that the stand was bent in the middle. here are some pics of construction using 2x4 with 3/4" plywood sandwich. stand was done last year in may 2007 fill with water by june 2007. single sheet of 3/4" ply was used for base and only toward the end where display was not sitting was another piece.

Looks very well built Bart. In the original picture above, it looks like it may be bowing, but perhaps that is just the camera doing something weird. It is a long span in the front though.

yeah my camera skills ain't the best. all along the wall 2x4 was mounted to wall stud to make it stronger, then level it all from front to back. i made sure all the 2x4 used was straight and uniform. even the 3/4" sandwiches pieces was screw onto first 2x4 before adding second piece. just don't know why it started to crack, few days before it happened i had seen a little toward the bottom, but nothing to worried about. all the sudden next day had a crack about 6" moving toward the top, so i went ahead and removed all livestock and placed them in main display.

I'm with Jon, Bart. Those timbers are spanning to far to take a decent load. The trimmers would help to stiffen it, but I would try to prop the middle after all is set up, but before water is added. IMO there's no such thing as over kill, when it comes to supporting loads of water ;)

did that last night and its leveled using 6' level beam. i do have 3/4" foam below the display too.

You can see the foam is squished on the ends and puffed out in the middle in the pic above with the water in the tank. It looks like it is curving. That is a long ways to go with no support, why not put something in the middle. I agree better to be safe than sorry with lots of water.

Most glass tak manufacturers specify to not use foam under the plastic molding IIRC. Really hard to tell from pics because of the visual warping. And what is done is done. I certainly don't need to arm-chair QB Bart!

When you set up the next one, check on what the manufacturer specifies with regard to foam, or better yet, use an acrylic tank. It will give you better thermal protection as well and since it's not a display tank, scratching it shouldn't be such a big issue.
