Fish dissapearing, Mantis???

Heh I agree there.. i never thought id have what i have in my tiny 75 gallon let alone yours! Spoooooooooky :)

my thoughts EXACTLY/....
you might have some other predator in there, so don't automatically assume mantis.
if your missing snails and hermits, then I'd assume mantis, but since you haven't mentioned that, only fish....
you might either have some other meanie,
or your scavengers are working really, REALLY well!!!

I don't have that much LR for such a big tank, I just have about 50 pounds. I have FOWLR and live sand. I don't have a cleanup crew yet, no snails, no hermits, I just have 2 camel shrimps. I don't know if they're be able to clean the fish up completelely after the died. I might get more LR and I'll problaby pick up the Rocks this weekend just to see if I see anything dead lying around. Maybe I don't have anything and they just died.

Not to be condescending (Oh man I can't spell) but that is a very small amount of live rock for such a large tank. Are you sure your tank is even done cycling? What are your water parameters?

Why can't I get my smiley/frowny faces to work?

this is WAR went to do a wc and saw the mantis darting around in and out of rocks... cant take it no more!! tearing tank apart

My quest is over!!!! Finally I have caught the villan :) Took getting angry but I got it out. And I found a crab of somesort also and put him in the fuge along with the mantis. The mantis is reddish color and very interesting. its wierd how he never comes out till the pumps are off wonder why that is?

Anyways, finally... untill the next problem....... :D

Sorry to jump into your thread BigVic, i wish you luck with YOUR problem :) And thanks lil for helping. :)

I'm not planning on a Reef, I have a FOWLR and LS, that's why I have so little LR. I'm planning to get some more and add up, but like I said I'm not making a Reef tank. Should I still fill up with LR?

Well the point behind the live rock is filtration maybe thats why the comment was made that you had very little rock. Cause a tank that big would need alot of lr unless you have other forms of filtration perhaps.

what about the LS?

what about the LS?

I have heard people say that a DSB can filter a tank without LR...Is this not true?

I am a newbie here, so dont take what i personally say to heart heh I was hoping the lfs owner or someone with more experience would hop in somewhere. Bleh. But from what I read it helps filter too. :)

LR and LS are used in conjunction...
I think its mainly for both of the filtration factors...
I KNOW that you can get away with only having LR, but I don't know if you can get away with only LS....
but, the main point of having LR is that the fish will be less stressed out in a semi-natural environment. Thats why a few of us go by the lb/LR/gal. its a good amount of rock for fish to hide in, and it gives the filtering capabilities,....
but, lil ole me goes with more....
it just LOOKS so nice with a ton of rocks, with holes and crevaces for the fish to swim in and out of.
and it DOESN'T have to be a reef for it to need lots of rocks ;)
