I assume its a type of goby or blenny, but haven't found anything that seems to match. Just curious. Saw it in the tide pools in Maui.

It is a goby, something like Asteropteryx or Hezeus but without a better view of the side and fins I can't tell.

Thanks!...on my phone so looking those names up now is tough, but i'll check them out later and post back if you are on the mark without seeing the side and fins...

So, it seems these names aren't really getting me there. I'm not looking at color specific stuff, since I'm sure that some of these guys have adapted to the sand around them. What I am seeing though is that most of the ones I'm finding with the names from above are much thinner that what I saw. These guys seem to have more of a shark shape with the larger head thinning down into a longer body, where are the gobies I'm seeing when I search have more a of pencil shape, without any real widening at the head. I'm of course not finding color correctly either, but I'm kind of ruling that out...
Anything I might be able to describe in a little more detail that would help with an ID?
They were in every little tide pool you looked at, if you took the time to let your eyes adjust. I didn't notice any shrimp with them, but that could be that the shrimp were better at hiding. I also noticed that there were often 2 or 3 of them in a a small space, maybe 1x1... they didn't seem aggressive to the others, but not knowing anything about them, I wouldn't venture a guess on whether or not I was seeing pairs. I also didn't see much sand sifting through the gills. I did see it, but it was no where near a constant activity, and these guys seems just as happy to slide up the rocks and pick at the sides as to be in the sand.
I know they pictures aren't great but the fish match the sand, so, even with a really good camera I'm not sure if I would have gotten a better pic. I also know that wild shots have a much smaller shot of getting an ID... I've been digging through sites here and there for a few days, and I'm just not finding anything that matches....

Cool... good call. I was at least able to find the right shape/size with this. Guessing I would go with Bathygobius fuscus as the closest match, but the coloration is wrong... but I think your dead on with genus.

seems closest shape wise.
Thanks!

goby?

goby?

I caught this little guy on a trip to Caldesi Island Park in Dunedin, FL on a collection trip. Also scored a pistol shrimp. Anyone got an ID on these?

Twin Spot Sand Goby (Coryphopterus duospilus)?
The eyes are wrong, not that popped out... and didn't observe much if any real sand sifting.
I think this may be as close as I'm going to get on the ID, since I doubt these are available to hobbyist.....
Bathygobius sp.

Almost impossible to tell the difference between species.

I appreciate the attempt. Would really love to put a name on it, after searching and getting some comments here, it doesn't seem like its going to happen though.

As mentioned above the blenny is probably a molly miller but it is a juvenile fish so it is hard to tell, as for the pistol shrimp there are over 400 species off the coast of FL so it would be hard to get to the genus let alone species with just a photo.
