Cod Fish

New member
I got this colony today and when he picked it up there was a tiny fish in it that wouldn't shake off. It's really cute. Anyone know it name? It's the best picture I could get of it. It's light pink with red speckles all over and about an inch long, maybe less.

My guess is a velvetfish, Caracanthus species, they are also known as coral crouchers. There are 4 species and two are common in the hobby, having even been bred in captivity. I have read that they are coral eaters, but I can't be sure of that, they also eat any meaty foods you put in the aquarium. The books and online articles say if they are in a tank with live corals they can be fed once a day, otherwise they need to be fed more often, making me believe that they eat at least some coral. They are very territorial so unless you find a known pair keep this one by him or herself. They are also mildly venomous so be careful while handling them.

I have never tried to collect one, but they are common in Hawaii and I see them on any dive that I look for them. Because they do not try to leave the coral I have never considered collecting them, I don't believe there is any fish worth damaging a coral to collect, although I have no problem chasing a fish out of the branches if it can be done without hurting the corals, there are just some fish that I don't even try and this is one of them.

EDIT:While I was posting others have posted the same answer, but here is a little more information on keeping them

I talked to the owner of the shop and he said it has been nesting there for quite some time. I wouldn't mind if he carves out a little spot and the nest grows around it. It also has a little crab buddy in there next to him.

its a coral croucher. these guys are very cute. it does not eat coral and will stay at that size. they are a lot like anglers in their behavior and eat meaty foods.
