Just think about what people do to themselves with plastic surgery, some of that stuff is pretty disgusting too.

But some of that stuff is pretty nice too. ;)

( o )( o )

I'll leave it up to your imagination. :eek2:

Psionicdragon, so you are saying that the article is about TREATING infected fins, versus cosmetic mutilations? That seems more reasonable.

From my understanding of someone who translated this (who is fluent in chinese), the first page is about infections. The second and 3rd one is about cosmetics. To justify the cutting of the tail, the tail is still there and can grow again (from the article).

Will this work on tangs? It may keep the fighting down? :D

(o)(o) implants for tangs to keep the fighting down? Could work :D Banging their silicone breasts about could slow any male fish down IMO:p

Psionicdragon, are you sure the person you talked to really can read chinese? Chinese is my native launguage, and I have been reading it for more than 30 years. I just went and read the article again, and can not see anything that you mentioned.

While I think it is crude to do these operations on fish, I also agree with the argument that this is widely practiced on other pets and animals (including ourselves), sometimes in much worse ways in this crazy world. The difference is that you see it graphically here, and you do not see people chopping dog's tail off or cutting up each other with graphics. I bet you will be much more turned off if you see that.

Oops I meant cutting the tails off.

My wife confirms what tonggao translated. Though it was harder for her. She said "Argh! I could read it better if it wasn't in that stupid simplified Chinese! I hate that!". I didn't even realize that there was simplified Chinese writing! And she read it to me in Madarin, even though I only understand Cantonese...

Part of the article apparently said that some people (Joseph Mengele?) experimented to see if breeding fish with their tails bobbed (to put it less brutally) would produce a breed of tailless fish. To it's credit, the article said "Of course not! You aren't modifying the genetics of the fish"... So it must be a bunch of crackpots trying that.

But, people will pay more for "unique" fish that have been mutilated and dyed.

Bottom line ... just don't buy the fish as there won't be a supply without demand!

Yes, I am sure. She has been reading Cantonese, Mandarin, and Tou-san (basically, same chinese) for 62 years. Unless there was a mistranslation somewhere.
