Fishing for some ideas!

I deleted what I said as to not cause tension or try to start anything due to a PM I received from someone stating that that was my plan, which wasn't and for those that read it, I'm sure you understand.

I'd just like a place to go w/no commentments and talk shop and where people don't judge or talk about others behind his/her back, yet can say what you believe w/o getting harrassed or someone twisting it to tick someone else off. Gees, this is a fun hobby and no one has all the knowledge we need to save our reefs. Otherwise they would work for the governement and help our planet. People aren't always going to get along, but a person has to see both sides of the story when reefing and talking about what works and doesn't work. Just like raising kids, every reef setup is different, and how a person wants to proceed is his/her choice. What works for one, may not work for all, that's how we all learn. I'm still learning! I enjoy BYOB and think that should be rule #1!

Good luck with the SEAS.

Boy, I'm not on for one evening and look how much happens! I hate to see all the bickering. On the other hand I suppose it is good to get everyones opinion so the club can be even better this time around!
I personally, will give my 20.00 and hope we can make something happen with these funds, instead of waiting until the club becomes "good enough" However, Im not saying this is the right way to go for everyone and I do believe the club should remain open for everyone. If participation isnt high enough then we can nix it but I believe if the club turns into "something" "they will come" :)
Aquaconnect raises some good points and Im sure everyone has complaints so lets make the club something to be proud of and address these things..... (in a real meeting members and potential members)
So, again, I say we have a count on who will come: Looking thru the posts I count four who say they are interested not counting trigger> who I assume could be talked into it :)
I dont assume to understand the problems as I have not been a member but monthly meetings, fragging demnstrations, group trips, and some reef talk sounds great to me! Ive had enough fun with the few of you I talk with.... how would a whole group be

Oh, and rule #2, my wife isn't allowed to attend!

BTW, you are more than welcome to that Tyree frag to have a silent auction to raise money for the club. It's 1"X 1 1/2" so a good sized frag and should help the club out some.

I didn't even now that as a club member I could get 10% of at Midwest Aquatics. These things should be published as that alone is incentive that may be appealing for some to join. As a member I didn't even know this.

ok, heres one for everybody..... what would YOU like to see the club become? At the moment, its not really anything... so we have a blank sheet to work with. And for those who had reasons for not joining... lets hear them.. Obviously if you have not joined in the past, there is/was a reason why. So lets hear it, and see if we can work things out. Dave, I appreciate the offer on the coral donation which brings me to another question... where would be a good place to auction something of the sorts? here on RC, at an event, or ebay? If you do not feel comfortable voicing your opinion, feel free to PM me. I have purchased hosting for the seas site, and in the next few days should have it back up and running. Anyone have any club ideas? Site ideas? I want to hear ALL positive and negative concerns, gripes, etc. The club was founded on members hosting meetings at their houses to show off their tanks. This is also something I feel we need to start again. Lets get the holidays out of the way (and hopefully I feel better by then), and I will host a meeting at my house. I don't mind showing off my new setup. So, after I show mine off,.... who is next? Guys, the club can be as complex, or as simple as we want it. As big, or small as we desire... But sitting idle, will accomplish nothing. I am all for the quarterly frag swaps, the coral fragging demonstrations... what direction do you want to see the club take? That is the most important question.. I'm all ears!

Discounts to local stores were we are already going to spend money is a great option. I heard but missed it that the build your own live rock was pretty popular. If I remember right before I joined they had a build your own tank workshop down in Arkansas at Exotic Tropicals. I thought that would be really cool to attend. How about some how to do workshops like those that might be beneficial to the members. Or maybe a how to build your own calcium reactor or skimmer or something of that sort. I've seen quite a few of these workshops on bigger forums and that might be an incentive to attend and join.

I figured you could just get the frag from me, take it to the next meeting or swap and just have a silent auction for only those who attend the actual meeting and stay the whole time, to try and get your attendance up and get people to join and to keep things local and easy. And those who don't want to join can just pay your cover charge to be eligible. But feel free to do it however you want, I'm just providing the frag and don't want any responsibility with it.

Nobody wants my simple frags :( J/k
I would be willing to host the 2nd meeting. My tank should be more pleasing by then. I live downtown in a loft but have plenty of room for everyone and would love to shw off my tank!
I like the idea of building workshops ( reactors, live rock, ect ) and would be willing to help put together any such events.
I would like to schedule some field trips to st. louis, K.C., Arkansas for reef stores> Im always wanting to go but dang gas prices! My Land Rover holds 8 and I would be willing to drive soooo maybe that would be an option. Plus going with others would be much more fun.
I'll think of more :)

Tonight at my house, we held a SEAS staff meeting. Several things were discussed, and I will post what we came up with soon. I asked John Kelly to attend being he was at the reigns when the club was strong, and are basically going to rebuild the club on what it used to be at that time. I will post more about it tomorrow when I have a little more time. Thanks!

Great! I will put you on the list for a meeting. Would anyone else like to host a meeting at their house? Comon.... I know you want to show that tank off! :)

once again someone is whining on here not sure what everyones problem is and not sure why they have to type ********************************************** guess too uneducated to type words that show up. I think everyone on here that is whining should shut their mouth and find a different club or start one themselves if they dont want to be charged to A. join the club. OR B. pay to attend

John, If you had read my posts completly, you would have seen I said that events average $100. Yes, Fish was kind enough to provide the food at the last event. The club treasury provided some of the pop, charcoal, lighter fluid, and chips. Other people brought items as well. The last frag swap went well, and you are correct that Fish provided the majority of the food. The frag swap we held at my house that you were unable to attend, I paid for the majority of the food out of pocket. That frag swap cost me about $200 to get everything set up for it. The club provided a bag of salt as a door prize, and I matched it with another one as well. Also, If you read my last post last night, you would see that you are complaining about nothing, as we held a meeting and came up with a solution. The club is not here to make a profit. All funds that are collected from memberships, fundraisers, ETC, go to provide the club with more events. It is all spent on getting events under way. I was just trying to figure out a way to have a sure way to be able to continue to hold events. We are planning a fragging demonstration, and THE CLUB will be purchasing a large SPS colony, a large LPS colony, and some sort of large softie colony. We will be demonstrating how to frag this these type of corals, and the members will be able to take frags home. Members get a 10% discount at fish's store, and members will be elligable to win door prizes. So.. theres your answer in a nutshell. Where would your $20 go if you joined? Thats where. Funds will also go to provide food at events when we are not lucky enough to have someone like Fish provide it. If I remember correctly, the club also paid for materials used at the Live rock making demonstration, and the pizza that was served there. (Correct me if I am wrong John Kelly). I never said the club pays for everything, I am just saying it costs money to hold such events, and to be able to hold future events, SEAS money WILL be used. It may only be used in part of the event, it may be used to pay for the entire event,.. depending on what that event is. I think you are way out of line in the content of your posts. I have learned in life that a decision can never be made concerning a group of people, and keep ALL involved happy... That seems to be the case here.

Thats EXACTLY what we are working on. A regular monthly meeting at a members house, Quarterly events, such as frag swaps, fragging demonstrations, etc. to be held in public places, stores etc.. All I need for the ID cards at the moment is a copy of the seas logo, which I will be getting today, and I can make them. I also purchased hosting for theseas.org yesterday, and will be receiving the backup of the site today too. I should have the site back up and running within the week. Members will also have the opportunity to win prizes at the quarterly events. Fish has already offered a coral that I was supposed to raffle at the past frag swap, but will all that was going on, it slipped my mind. Now, on the T-shirt, this will have to be something the club as a whole will have to vote on. You said you work for a screen printing shop? Would you be able to get us a good deal on say 50 shirts? I was not trying to upset anyone, and I know you offered to be a part of the club in the past, I was just throwing some ideas out there to get some feedback.. The title of this thread is however, "fishing for some ideas". We need the input of current members, as well as the input of perspective future members. I am only one person, and have been trying to get this club off the ground for months. It takes the ideas of many to make an organization such as this, to work, and work well. My personal goal as president, is to turn the club back into the fun, educational organization it has been in the past, and nothing less. Thanks for reading, and understanding.

Jason

We will also be working on a new member packet, that will contain information such as how the club works, what our goals with the club are, membership card, and all discount information. This will take a little time to get it all together. I have also tossed around the idea of a monthly newsletter.
