flasher wrasse problems

I have a flasher wrasse that I got and introduced to my tank about 3 weeks ago. I have a couple clowns and a sailfin tang all in my 50 gallon with him. He hides in my rockwork and literally comes out only for a second during feedings. He is a cool looking wrasse but I only see him once a day and it is only for a second each time. As soon as he sees another fish he is back into the rocks. Is there anything I can do to make him more comfortable or to coax him out more. When I observed him at the lfs he was all over the tank.

mine has done that for almost 6 months and then as he grows bigger he hangs out in the open near his cave longer, not all day, just longer. Give it time, unless you see bullying going on.

it's possible he's being intimidated by your other fish, especially the tang. that fish needs a minimum 180g tank.

+1 He's kind low man on the totem pole with that crowd.

I have a tiny McCoskers in a 155 but his tank mates are other wrasse, clowns, pyramids butterflies, gramma, goby, angel and one Ctenochaetus tang. He flashes all the time at the Royal Gramma.

The tang is going to need to be moved, and soon. Tangs become aggressive and scary and showy in too small of a tank, so the wrasse is probably afraid of Mr Tail Knife.

Having dither fish in the tank will help. The flasher will be more comfortable seeing more small fish out and about in the water column.

Sailfin tangs usually dont pay much attention toward flasher wrasses, especially if it is still small enough to be housed in a 50g.

Yeah I appreciate every ones concern on the size of the sailfin but now he is a juvenile and I am already in the process of building another tank. He doesnt bother any of the othe tank mates right now. I just didn't know if there was a way to make him more comfortable.

you could try moving some of your rock work around to make new territories. if any of the other fish are bothering the wrasse, they might be confused enough to leave him alone.

220 with a 40 gallon sump

And maybe once I get everything done on my bigger tank and transfer over my tang he will settle down and come out a little. He is just very very skiddish
