Flashers Wrasse love connection

Seeing as it seems to be so hard to find female Flasher Wrasses in this hobby, could you mix and match different kinds of Flashers to make a pair and get the male to "flash" more? For example, a male Carpenters with a female yellowfin flasher. Are they similar enough to work and keep the female from changing to a male and causing problems?

yes most fairies and flashers will flash at most any female, and sometimes males. but without a male of the species of female you are keeping, the odds are she will turn into a he. So if you want pairs best bet is to keep checkin DD email alerts. its hard to get those fish because it seems everyone wants wrasses these days.

also you can generally keep males of different species together with no problem, given you feed frequently, it is when you have 2 males of the same species together that you run into issues.

I believe female flashers aren't caught due to color purposes. IE: divers will target the nicer, therefore more expensive flasher (the male)

I get female bellae, but thats it... lol Once and a while a female mccosker or carpenter will show up from Indo.

reefjunkie, where is the mccosker in your sig from?

PIA, wouldn't you agree that the difficulty in classifying the females also makes collection and export more difficult?

Your right. It is very hard to find female flashers. DD just had a couple pairs of McCoskers listed in the last week. If I didn't have a carpenter flasher pair I would have got one because of how hard it is to find female flashers.

That is why I ask... I have a male Carpenters Flasher and I see they have a female Yellowfin Flasher wrasse on LA Divers Den. That's what got me wondering if you can mix them. Im sure my male would flash the female but my big worry is if the female (yellowfin flasher for example) will stay female with my male Carpenters in the tank or change into a male, causing problems. I currently have a Yellow Coris (Halichoeres chrysus), a Lubbocks Fairy, and the male Carpenters. All three get along well with no fighting.

Sorry for taking over the thread

I can only find 2 female's of a certan flasher if I put them in the same tank will one change into a male

From the way I understand it, Yes. Without a male one of the females should change into male. Someone correct me if Im wrong

I think if people in the hobby demand more female wrasses then they will become more available, law of supply and demand I think it is... I am planning on getting trios of fairy wrasses, but if I find female flasher wrasses I am pulling the trigger for sure!

They could also be juvie flashers which is the hard part of getting females. I wonder if buying them small could mean you getting a female or two???
