Flow for a 240

Ok, so I have a load of different pumps that suck up electricity and make alot of noise, so I am looking at going "all tunze"

I've got two 6060's already.

I've just order a master electronic 1073.090 to replace my ocean runner 6500.

And I am looking at getting a TS24 kit (consisting on two 6101's and a 7095 controller).

I was going to let the 6060's run full throttle 24/7, and set the 6101's to pulse on and off (whatever is recommended) for wave motion, and then I was going to direct the return pump behind the rock work. Does that sound like a good combo for my 8x2x2 tank?

Question RE the 6101's and controller - the 6060's have faily short cords on them..... barely 5 or 6'. Are the 6101's any better?

I am going to get started on the plumbing this weekend - what size pipe should use for the return pump (I am going to sit it in the sump).

The pipe is 1.5" but it also comes with an adapter for a metric hose. The 6101's have 16ft of cord.

By the way, be sure to add a couple unions so the pump can be easily removed for service. A weakness of the 1073.09 is it does need fairly regular cleaning, every four months I would take it out and clean it.

Hi Roger,

Sorry for the very much delayed acknowlegement of your replies!

The pump still hasn't arrived yet (Master Electronic 1073.090). I've decided to plumb it using hard PCV (well HDPE Actually). It will be pusing about 33 feet horizontally and about 7 feet vertically. There will be approximately 8-10 elbos (90 degree) to get from sump to tank, plus a ball valve for flow adjustment (hopefully my overflows will be able to just handle full bore). I will also include unions as you suggest for maintanence. Should I just come off the pump with 1.5" and stick with the 1.5" all the way?

Made enquiries - I'm told its cheaper / better availability of parts if I come off with a 1.5" to 50mm threaded to plain sleeve adapter. Would the increase in diameter be detrimental or beneficial - I could just as easy conver it down to 38mm straight after the threaded adapter....... would that be better?

By the way...... pump arrived today...... guess what I'm doing for the weekend

I just saw your reply now - I dunno how I missed the "alert" to notify me of your response. Anyway, I have plumbed the thing for 50mm pipe now......

In a certain respect, its probably as well that I did because the ball valve really reduces the nominal bore to about 30 or 35mm (guessing by looking through the end).

So, at the moment, I have a 50mm pipe returning to the tank. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm guessing after 7' vertical head and 33' horizontal head along with 10 elbos that the exit velocity will be pretty slow........ Hence, I was thinking of splitting the return into two 32mm or even 25mm returns to increase velocity a little...... does this sound feasible / advisable?

Roger - just a quick update (both for you and for anyone who might be following) - I have plumbed the whole thing using a single 50mm return, and its perfect - running on full bore, 50mm direct into the tank - it gives a forecefull but gentle flow - a bit like a stream, but slightly more more brisk - if that makes any sense - only thing is that when you switch the pump off the back-syphon is quite significant! I'm going to have to mess around with this until I get it right to break the syphon.

Ok - so I still didn't get my new streams.......

As before, I have the 2 no. 6060's ...... I'm planning / looking / thinking.....

Question is - would the TS48 kit be too much for my tank - I mean, where would I position them, and would they create impossible sand storm conditions?

Or is the TS24 together with the two existing 6060's going to be more than adequate?

If the tank is for SPS I could see using a TS48, otherwise I think 2 6101 and 2 6060s is fine.

Thanks Roger - yes it is for SPS with about 1" of sugar fine caribsea aragamax sand..... mixed in with some slightly heavier stuff...... my only concern is the sand...... if I go for the TS48 do you think I will be able to "tune" the pumps to not blow everywhere, forever?

The 6101's allow you to switch them from functioning like an old 6000 (1850 gph top flow) or a 6100 (3200gph top flow) I think you should be able to avoid a sand storm by using these settings in addition to the speed control.
