Flow question

I have a 210g with 40g of water in the sump. The sump contains the heaters, an algae scrubber and skimmer.

I would prefer the majority of all circulation needs to be performed by in-tank powerheads (yes Eric, I know, I should of had the tank drilled). So, I'm not concerned with the the return acting as flow for circulation in the tank.

That being said: How many gallons per hour should be pumped from my sump to the tank in order to provide enough exposure to the equipment in the sump?

Hey it's never too late to have rod come over and drill a few holes. As to your question...I think it's more of a feel basis. You can always tune down a stronger pump.

I presently have three return pumps running at a total of 2100g per hour. I would like to dispense with one of the pumps (too noisy with three pumps and the sound of the water turbulance in the sump), resulting in 1400g per hour. In order to maintain good tank circulation, I'll either add a closed loop or additional powerheads inside the tank.

The question is: Is 1400g an hour for the return acceptable?

that gives you around 7x turnover thru the sump. That is more than plenty IMO for your equipment. I would think that you could get by with half that.

I aggree, there is no reason why you should be using 3 returns. Two pumps should be sufficient or just buy 1 stronger pump and save the engergy. Sell at least one of the pumps and look into a Tunze 6200. It's time to look into Tunze...you cannot go wrong.

3 to 5 x the tank volume in the sump. If you wanting more flow you could look at those maxijet mods.

With a 210G, I would go Tunze over Seio. I have a 44G pentagon tank and I am running 2 Seio 820s. I wish I would have gone the next step up. I would think that the Tunzes would be better suited for a tank that size.

2 maxi-jet mods with the 1.75 dumas would be plenty...you could run 1 return pump with those bad boys.

2 1500 SEIO's would work nice. 120 bucks for those or $1000 for two Tunze w/ controller.

I actually have two 1500 Seio's in the tank now and I'm fairly happy with them. For the price difference, I'll probably go for two more.

My two cents.

This guy who builds a lot of sumps, says 3 - 5x.

Also, Seio 1500's are on sale at Dr. Foster and Smith for $62.

I ordered one and some other stuff last week Sunday and got it on Tuesday. Standard shipping charge.
