Flow Question

I was thinking I wanted a closed loop system on my next tank but have been leaning more towards the Streams lately.

What would provide the best flow pattern in a custom 120 (48x30x22) with a single center overflow?

1. one in each of the top, front corners, facing in at the rockwork

2. one on each side of the overflow facing the front wall or corners

3. one in each of the front corners, on the bottom, in deco-rocks, facing in at the rock work (I know this would be a nightmare for maintenance)

4. with either configuration, would you suggest 6000s or 6100s

I will probably have an 1100 gph return pump (split to two returns) and would ideally not want to need more flow.

All of these sound better than a closed loop. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

If it is SPS and barebottom or coarse sand you could use two 6100, otherwise 2 6000. Unless it is barebottom option 3 will not work, the pumps would have to be above the sand or they will suck it in.

Option 1 or the opposite, in both back corner aimed to front center would likely be the best.

rvitko,

thanks for the response. I have a few more quick questions.

1. If they are placed in the top front corners facing in, can they be angled at any compound angle or do they have to be level?

2. If I placed them on the back wall, wouldnt the flow have to bounce off the front wall in order for the flow to cover the face of the rock work? Does that make sense? From what I understand about fluid dynamics, the water would not bounce back, it would flow along the glass until it hit another obstacle. Also, wouldnt you have a potential problem of corals growing in front of the Tunze outputs?

The tank will definately be bare bottom. Maybe a little small rubble or very course sand/rubble (very course). Mostly SPS and a very select few LPS. Almost no softies with the exception of a few mushrooms or zoos.

I dont love the idea of putting them right in the front corners where you can't help but notice them but I personally think that would be the best option for flow and maintenance.

Thanks again,

They only swivel left to right so no upwardor downward angle is possible. The Stream flow is 24" in diamter so any upward or downward movement should not be necessary, new units will swivel ablout 60 degrees each way.

The flow does bounce off as well as travel along the front. The stream is so wide it should cover the whole tank.
