Flukes...

At what point in an infestation is it simply too late? I was at Petco today (no idea why..) and I saw this:

Sorry about the horrible quality video. Trying to take a decent video while holding a squirming 7 month old is really fun. Anyway... I am thinking about adopting this fish and trying to save it. There are flukes all over it, it's really disgusting. I can see them crawling around on him. Respiratory rate is up, fish is on it's side, very skinny. I have the know-how, meds, empty qt.... but at this point, what are the chances the fish will survive the first dip? I'm worried that he will bleed out when the flukes die because there are so many. Any input is appreciated. This is why I can never support Petco.

He needs an immediate f/w dip if he is to have any chance. But from the looks of him, I'm not sure he'd survive a f/w dip. But triggers are pretty tough; so it's a toss up. Keep in mind, there might be more wrong with him than just Flukes.

I'm almost positive there is more wrong, but flukes are the immediate concern. What you said is my exact worry... I would rather not go to all of the work to get my small QT ready just to have him die an hour after I get him dipped and situated.

Get this, the fish manager thinks "he'll be fine" and won't adopt out a $25 fish. I guess that settles that. He actually seems pretty irritated that I pointed out the issue.

Most of them don't care. It's just another "thing" to sell. Where I live Petco just recently started selling s/w fish. They couldn't even go a month without having dead fish floating around everywhere.

what a shame - so petco would rather see the fish die? did you ask what treatment they were planning to use? shame shame shame. this is the type of thing gives the aquarium trade a bad name, when so many people do care.

According to the employee they aren't allowed to use medication, and he would lose his job if he treated the tank. I'm just disgusted by what I saw - and if the trigger was that bad on the outside, I can only imagine what is going on with every other fish in their system. They are allowed to FW dip, and they did after I left. Like I said though, the fish manager seemed irritated that I created more work for him. I highly doubt these people know how to properly execute a FW dip anyway.

The only reason I thought to ask was because I have rescued fish from this petco before. I got two yellow tangs back in February that were emaciated and had the worst case of fin rot I have ever seen. One looks almost normal now but I think the other is going to have some permanent damage to his dorsal spines. They thought the tangs had a cosmetic defect and they "were just fine" too. I liked the dollar a gallon sale, but I can honestly say now I'm not going in there again.

Really sad to see, most LFS around me have recruited managers that actually seem to care about the fish, even Jacks and Petsmart. If it was me, I would spend the $25 and try to save him.

I am really torn about that Doogy, not because I care much about the $25, but because of the practice. If I buy him, they will just order another one and stick him in the same tank and the process will start again. I don't want to give money to a store that so blatantly shows a complete disregard for life, I would be supporting it.

Yea I know what you are saying, you're right. They would just torture another fish, cant save them all :/
