Fluval Edge 6 Gallon Build

I'm considering purchasing a Viper HQI Clamp-On Light 70 watt MH light and doing away with the Fluval's entire light system. Any thoughts?

I would think you would have some major heat issues with this set-up. It seems a bit overkill. Look at some of the nano LED set-ups from nanotuners. Some of them can fit under the hood if you turn the hood 90 degrees.

hi i've set up my edge also. cycling for about a month now with some signs of brown stuff all over the place. that clamp on light looks nice, do you plan on keeping the stock hood?
im using mr16 bulbs and some blue led light strips currently and so far am having good success
cool! yea im not sure if i want to deal with MH with this system, although it would be pretty cool. that "brown stuff" is diatoms fyi, so you're going through your cycle and all is well. ummm....well depending on which light system i eventually buy i may or may not keep the hood. it all depends on if the new lights will fit. still looking for a replacement, right now i have mr11 bulbs in the mail but i want something more beneficial and cooler looking :spin1:

That's red gracillaria. I have the same macroalgae in my Edge. And I know the green algae but the name of it is slipping my head at the moment. To combat the light problems. I completely removed the swing arm and bought a Coralife 9" Mini-Aqualight with one 9W actinic and one 9w 10k bulb. I placed over the opening of the tank length-wise and turning the hood 90 degrees so the long edge of the hood goes side to side instead of front to back. I had to cut the back panel of the hood off and used this piece to cover the filter area. This set-up allows more light across the tank from side to side and helps to alleviate the spot-lighting effect of just the center of the tank. I put a fan on the back for heating issues but haven't had to use it yet, probably will when summer rolls around. I took out the biocylinder bag and added a bag of phosban to help with filtration. Kept the sponge and filter. I clean everything out once per week. And so about a 50% water change each week. My goal someday is to put a sump in the stand below the tank and have an overflow built for the tank, and to replace the coralife fixture with the nano led light set-up from nanotuners. But my money is currently going to upgrade my larger system. Then I'll upgrade the lighting on my nanocube, and then I'll concentrate more on this system.

Hope this gives you some useful ideas.

i've been thinking about either extending my hood or turning it 90 degrees like you said, but i haven't extensively planned out this process and im not even sure which type of light i want to go with. any preference on LED fixtures from nanotuners? i looked on their site a couple days ago but nothing caught my eye.

Looking good, I would check the temp gauge to see how accurate it is I have one of these and it's about 4 degrees off. I did the cold water test a cup of ice and look for about 32 to 32 degrees

UPDATE: couple of friends to boost the cycle, even tho i added some Seachem bacteria. discounted price at my LFS and i couldnt resist!!
(they're REALLY hard to photograph!)

thanks for the advice! i'll test tomorrow with a thermometer (glass, that is) and see what I come up with.

@Daniel62--tested with a glass thermometer and came up with a reading of 78 degrees (give or take a couple tenths of a degree) so i would say my current electric thermometer is accurate, as it reads 77.6 degrees

Ok so the entire past couple hours I have spent running around getting supplies for my generator and I finally got it set up and connected to my tank! My power has been out for the last 3 hours due to the icepocolypse which hit southern Indiana today. Although I have class cancelled for today and tomorrow and I should be happy I'm more worried about my tank! I added a pencil sea urchin and an emerald crab about thirty minute before I lost power, but all seems well now. The temperature only dropped about four degrees so I'm lucky compared to what could have happened. I will update with pictures of the new additions once I have power!

Power came on yesterday so i finally got my tank back on track! Here's some pics of the pencil urchin i added:

Tank is still cloudy from all the sand stirring, so i'll update once its settled.

i'll try and get some shots of my tank with the mr16s and led strips so you can see how the lighting is. Im trying my best to keep the stock hood, i like the way it looks.

how long after the diatoms showed did you start putting livestock in?

yea the fluval look is unique and i wanna keep it, i mean thats sorta the reason i bought it. im thinking about the stunner led strips right now.
well the diatoms showed up fairly soon after the tank was up, and ive been supplementing lighting with my old Current power compact light, so i would say it was maybe 3 days after? or maybe 2? i added Seachem bacteria booster to help the process along, and with my weekly 10% water changes i've kept everything in shape nitrates/ites & ammonia wise. i know i may have rushed it a bit, but i didn't want to put any fish in the tank that i wasn't going to keep bc it would be a PITA to get them outta this thing. I really liked the idea of 2 black OCs in the tank and when i was at my LFS i saw them at a really good price so i went for it. i couldn't help myself! :spin1:

you have 2 clowns in a 6 gallon?!

yes yes yes! don't worry though, i keep up with my weekly 10% water changes and i'll always keep everything in check. i know some people object to this, but hey-live a little right? (i don't mean to sound ignorant or anything btw!)

You better run carbon or you are gonna kill those clowns. 2 clowns in a 6 gallon isn't the best choice.

Wait a minute.......you dont have a clean up crew?

I also dont know if there is enough food for that urchin. Dont mean to sound so negative. Just saying.

Currently i am running carbon, so no worries there. And yes i knew i would be told that 2 clowns in this tank isn't a good decision, but as long as i keep up on the water changes and such it shouldn't be a problem IMO. I do have a cleanup crew actually, but its made up mainly of nassairus snails at the moment so they're always buried when i take pics during the day. I plan on getting peppermint shrimp and a cleaner shrimp soon, depending when my LFS has them. The peppermint will eliminate any aptasia and such. I'll also add a turbo or two, and a brittle star perhaps. Im basically adding CUC as i go, bc i don't want to over compensate and then have half of my crew die off. idk its a just a practical approach, start small and grow i guess. this is mainly why i got the urchin first, bc depending on the amount of algae that grows i'll know if how much to actually add to the crew in order to provide enough food for all. thanks for the advice/criticism though it all helps i'll make sure to keep an eye on it!

hmmm....to keep the Fluval Edge, or not to keep the Fluval Edge...thinkin about scrapin the Fluval and returning it then just transferring everything to a 10 gallon...any thoughts? i wanna do a rimless but no one sells them around here....

my friend just picked up a 10 gallon set with all the accessories form the LFS for 60 bucks and its rimless... the hood covers the top like a trimwould but without the hood on its rimless i think it was marineland??? but it was a deal and deffinatly rimless
