My lfs one of these guys for sale....very nice looking fish quite exotic..ive never seen one before and before i started some research i wanted to post it up here, anything you can tell me about the flying gurnard? Thanks

they get around 12-14 inches in length, requiring a tank in excess of 150 gallons. some sort of sand bed is needed, and it is recommended that they have much room without rocks in their way. They are designated "non reef safe" as they have been documented eating bottom dwelling fish and/or inverts. they are carnivores that should not have a problem with meaty foods such as frozen mysis. they are peaceful as well and should only be housed with peaceful tank mates

they are my favorite fish. So charasmatic, and weird. But yes they need alot of room as they do get big. Small peices of rubble should be placed on the bottom because they enjoy flipping them over to search for food

thanks for the info, the lfs didnt mention he was going to get that big...how fast do they grow? I read that they like live food....this guy is pretty small, i will be upgrading tanks in about a year reguardless

also i have him on hold at the store, they got him in wed and we tried feeding him last night, live ghost shrimp. he spotted the food immediately and went after it but he couldn't catch one, definitely wanted to though. should i wait it out even longer? or take him home.tonight?

LFS near me has one about 1.5" long. Cool looking cute little fish but they do get very large. At 12" long the "wings" will probably be 10" across. Way too big for my tank, even if they weren't potential predators.

ya so i brought the fish home last night, acclimated him just fine in a bucket. When he got in my tank he wast stressing at all, he even ate a couple pieces of mysis as I fed my tang and clowns. I couldnt believe he was so chill, i left the lights on for about 3 more hours last night after i put him in then i went to sleep. I woke up 45 min ago to see and my emrald crab picking his eyes out, fish has been dead for a few hours. Unreal, best and worst 12 hrs of this hobbies so far, he was such a bad *** fish what could have happened? My water all checks out fine and like i said he was eating ate the store before i bought him and then eating at my house..

they are delicate. That's why you don't see them often. Acclimation could be the problem, as in too much of it, if it went over 30 minutes.

Not that this helps you any, but it helped me. We saw these several years ago while snorkeling in St. Maarten...now I know what they were! They were quite large, with a pretty good "wingspan" and were in the strictly sandy areas when we saw them.
