OK, I am signing today on a new house. It is still close to my current home, but the home is larger and has a huge yard. With my second child on the way it was necessary. Anyhow, at this point I am now thinking of what and how to transfer my fish to the new home. I don't think I'll use my 380g tank in the new home. I'll likely go with a different size, either a 7' 265g or possibly even a custom 10' tank. I have to have something to house all my fish in till the new tank is installed when we are ready to move in a few months. But what would you guys recommend as far as transfer methods? Setting up several storage containers for the fish with maybe a HOB filter or something? Looking for ideas from those of you who have done this before, I know I've read some threads lately from those who have moved.

#1 Keep all your water, make sure the rock is submerged 100%.
Place fish in a separate container, tote, large trash can etc. Make sure they are safe for your animals first though.
#2 Move them as fast as you can, if you are going to be more than a few hours use a portable pump and airstone or better still a power head on a DC converter.
#3 Watch the temperature.
That's about it, try to remove all the rock and any coral before trying to catch the fish. Also be mindful of certain fish that may be hiding in the LR.

how far away are you moving? I recently moved my 180 from my old to new house. Maybe 3 miles or so up the road. I had a service but they saved all my water, placed the coral in separate buckets, placed the fish is the same brute container. took them about 3 hours to move the setup and hook it up. I then did the remaining work. I guess it depends on the distance you need to travel

Assuming the big tank is glass... I have done a few moves with very large glass seamed tanks, and The most important thing you can do whether you are moving 5 miles or 500, is to put the thing on pallets and frame it up while it is being transported it puts the stress on the wood and not the glass particularly the seams. I have a old 250 gallon tank that I got for 50 bucks years ago that won't hold water because it was just thrown in the back of a pickup, hauled down the road and it ruined some of the seal joints. if you notice most large tanks in the 175 and above size are transported this way for this reason.
