Forum Rules...

I think we should add a new rule to our forum. RC doesn't allow any for sale posts until 90 days and 50 posts (I think)... I think we should require the same for reviews of LFS, other members and other merchants. I'm not for censoring what people write (although I disagree with some of the tactics people employ), but this way only long-term people with a known track record can post stuff about others.

Any thoughts?

The RC rules already have the rule about for sale posts but the local club forums are not monitored as closely as the selling/trading forums. You can always report a post to a moderator (link at the bottom of every post) if you think someone is coming here to get around the rule.

Unfortunately there are some who forget that this is a privately owned site and not a public soapbox with unlimited freedom of speech. The user agreement is very clear about this.

As far as the reviews of LFS, we wouldn't be able to enforce such a rule but we could certainly stop encouraging the bashing and feeding the trolls that just post to see how much stink they can create. I'm all for a sticky that outlines the club's goals and our wish to keep posts focused on constructive advice and not "I got ripped off" rants.

RC has a very good statement about religoin and politics. Rants might also be included in topics that build walls instead of bridges:

Reef Central â€"œ an online community...

That is the introduction that welcomes visitors to this site, and also the reason for the growth and success of the board. RC is a community, represented by people from every corner of the globe. Reef Central has grown to many thousands of members representing every possible political, social, religious, and ethnic group. Through our common love of this hobby, RC members unselfishly give of their time and energy to help others. The goodwill and spirit of cooperation shown by all on this board helps tear down the walls that separate us.

Unfortunately, there are certain topics that build walls more often than tears them down. The “Religion, Politics, World Events” forum was created to give members an opportunity to discuss current events in a less structured environment. Although many members enjoy this forum, it is also very evident that topics discussed in that forum have insulted, embarrassed, and disturbed other members of Reef Central. It is also clear that by providing a venue for issues of a highly controversial nature to be debated, a great deal of animosity has developed among members of our community. Additionally, there are members of this board who are extremely valuable resources to the reefing hobbyist, but whose participation in that forum has jeopardized their standing in the community.

We would appreciate your understanding, and cooperation in this matter. In conclusion, we would like to say to the members of this board who are in the military, or have friends, or loved ones there, that we support you and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

When such a thread starts, we could point to that statement and let the thread die.

Yup, it is the general forum. All people in Sacramento are welcome to post there.

This is not a smart aleck comment. There club forums are for clubs. I've not seen a section for "location based" non-club forums.

No problem, I didn't take it that way at all, but I'm pretty laid back.

However, I would like a place to discuss anything with locals without throwing the name of the club out there. It is going to be a little tough to trade frags with folks or ask someone to come over and help me out in the general forum.

I totally agree. The club forum is a great place for all of those things. I just think that people need to exercise a little restraint and respect when posting things that could be perceived as negative.

Once posted an apology isn't able to retract the ill-will a negative post creates.

Life is a chain of trust. People get hired because the know someone. People shop at and dine at places because of recommendations from friends. The problem with a forum, is the chain doesn't necessarily exist. People are able to reach other people that don't know them and don't know their history. When someone posts negatively, most people don't have the context to gauge what the poster is saying and assess it's value like you can do with your friends and colleagues. When context is lost feelings get hurt and these threads spiral out of control.

If you have a bad experience, tell your friends. It will mean more to them then people you don't know. As someone who got tangled up in a super negative post by another member of the club, I know what this does to people. It isn't worth it. The club is supposed to be here to help members and prospective members.

I'm getting off my soap box.

Short of legislating when and what a user can post, just letting a 'poor form' thread die is the best thing. People don't understand this is a privately owned yet very public place. Don't say here what you wouldn't shout up and down your street and have logged in print permanently. I try to think of it this way: Every new thread is the front page of your daily local reefdork newspaper. This is today's news. What will you be remembered for saying this day?

So I am guessing there isn't a location based forum...

No, there isn't a geo specific forum.

The closest thing would be this forum, which is set-up through MARS.

Not to say there couldn't be one if some one stepped up. Some one in the Bay Area did the same, and we have two other local clubs:

Greater San Francisco Bay Area Reef Forum
An informal regional forum open to all in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California who wish to discuss and share information and ideas, buy sell or trade, and to promote captive propagation.

I think this is the most appropriate solution. If people could just resist the temptation of replying to an ill post, it would disappear in a day, if not within hours. Its the replies that give a thread its life...

Just don't poke the bear! :p

We have had the same problem wth the RC Forum in BAR before. Someone would post a negative thing and they weren't even in the club, but the club took the blame.

We basically tell everyone that the RC forum is open to anyone to post, but all club related posts should be done in our private forum area outside of RC. We just left it at that. Good luck.

Agreed, Arnold, that is indeed the best solution for many reasons. It would, however, require a good BB system and a lot of admin time to run the private forum. I logged onto the club forum last week and was surprised just how little it was utilized. It doesn't even seem to be monitored by the BOGs. (Last I checked, Kevin's questions weren't answered on there.)

I'd love to see this happen, as it is the "right" solution. The problem generally isn't with the people who are willing to let it die. It is everyone else that keeps posting.

we should also get the names and addresses of everybody on this forum, that way if they say something you dont like or agree with we can hunt them down and kill them and their family!
right?.....or something like that.....
