so, my family and I went to the beach for a week here in FL. (just got home today) check out what i found. :bounce3: the tide went out and left a big tide pool in front of the sand bar where the water was really calm, found this big crab and star fish. went to walmart and bought a 10 dollar filter and a 5g bucket to keep them alive in....

so now my question is, what kind are they, and are they reef safe. the star fish is about 6 - 7 inches across. and the crab is in a shell a little smaller than the size of my fist. also found a little emerald crab and small hermit crab too...and couple of fish you see in the pic.

i posted this in another area of the forum but there aren't many people viewing that section. so here it is again.

I'm not trying to be rude but I think I would have let them be. I think they are better off left in their natural environment. JMO.

I do have to agree with leaving them would be the best idea.

But I have taken Snails and Hermits back from CA to AZ and they have lived.

It is likely the Starfish will die from starvation. Most sandsifting Starfish die of starvation and they are usually small. That is a large Starfish and if it is a sandsifter type, it will need a heavily populated sandbed to thrive. The crab and hermits will be ok. Not sure about the fish. You will need to do research on them.

just a friendly note, that also likely required a Salt Water fishing license.

Yes to both. Why would you take animals out of the wild that you have absolutely no idea how to care for? Very irresponsible IMO. The likelihood of any of them surviving is basically zero%.

I think we should take it easy on him. Many of the livestocks we buy are also taken from the wild. The difference is, we paid and he didn't. That said, I do agree that the starfish will be a challenge.

ok so basically this will be the last time i visit this forum. that was extremely rude, if i had left the starfish it would have more than likely died anyway, it was in a tide pool in the sun that was dried up be the end of the day. if all marine animals were left in the wild then none of "YOU" would have a hobby...so get over yourself. I was excited about what i found, and for your information i do have a sand bed that the star fish would be fine in. I just wanted to get opinions on what kind it was....I guess its my fault for thinking that "adults" used this forum.

edit:
ps> i do have a saltwater fishing license.

+1

If I lived near a ocean/reef I would more than likely snag a couple things myself. My livestock is very well cared for. I might even of snagged that starfish as long as it was a aquarium friendly size.

Totally, damn hypocrites... Because if you paid someone to do it for you, it's ok...

+2 in fact I wish I did and know I would take stuff, probably make trips to the beach for that reason alone...

Keep us updated, don't listen to idiots who also think it's cruel to hunt, but buy meat from the store...

I'm at a loss here. Nobody was rude... they simply have an opinion. Maybe the OP should grow up and realize that this is a forum to discuss matters of this nature. I still think that it is irresponsible to take them. If the tide went out then it will come back. Why not leave them there for other people to enjoy. Selfish. You clearly dont know if you can take care of them properly or you wouldnt have asked what they are. Be a conscientious aquarists. Bye

Tidal animals are just that. Some tidal pools do dry up before the next tide comes in. The intertidial animals are adapted to survive those conditions. The OP studied these animals that he collected and knows they were destined to die?

wow :O

I live 5mins from the beach here in FL. I see these guys wash up and die all the time. Never picked one up cause, well, 1. I dont want to go to jail and 2. it will just die cause my water >>>>>>> that water lol

I tend to agree with the rope comment, lets not be too hasty in condeming someone for something that we all do everytime we add something to our tanks

all he did was cut out about 10 middle-men and $$$ for an animal that like he said WOULD have died on the beach..........hense all the dried star fish in all the local tourist shops all over FL :)

good luck with your starfish and crab bro, hope it lives, if it was me id toss it in my sump and grow them to monster size :) haha

Why keep fish tanks at all then? Was all of your livestock farm raised? Was any of it imported? Any guesses as to how a majority of ornamental fish in southeast Asia are caught? He went out and took a few organisms, AND he had a saltwater fishing license.

mford, don't let these power tripping posters force their opinions down your throat. I found a sargassum angler while at the beach last year (I have a license as well), and he has been doing great! Best of luck, and keep us posted on how he does!

My point is, research what you want to keep. Collecting something from the wild that you have no idea how to care for, IMO, is irresponsible. How do you know what it needs to survive and thrive?

Exactly. I take things from the gulf sometimes. its perfectly legal with a sw license. and why is it any more selfish than buying that pretty wild yellow tang at the lfs? Besides, tourists pick these up all the time at the local beaches, and sometimes they are still alive and they just collect them as shells! Also, sea gulls love washed up sea stars for lunch, so he very well could have saved it.

and for your information i do have a sand bed that the star fish would be fine in.

I would love to see a pic of this sand bed that it will be fine in as it will have to be huge. there are sand sifting stars half that size in 500 gal. tanks that starve to death because it can't sustain the food.

Are you kidding? No one was rude to you. You posted a picture of a delicate animal you took and said how do I care for it. You got the reply you didn't want to hear and said you're never coming on this forum again. Judging by your question, I would bet you don't have the proper populated sand bed for the star fish.

this post makes me want to go to the beach tomorrow and start a west coast FL beach tank :) gonna collect everything from the beach. figure ill get me a 30g tank and go to town. im gonna have a rock'in tank lol :)
