Coho or chinook salmon probably. Hard to tell because the face is decayed and the tail is partially buried in the sand, and the photo isn't clear enough to count spines on the anal fin.

My guess is a King, (Chinook). Judging by the size, (nice sandal reference L.), it's probably 25-30lbs and that's a more average size King vs. a well above average Coho.

Glad I posted this - needed a good laugh :)
My husband and I both disclosed later that we had each been wondering whether the meat was still good :)
Also glad you all appreciated the flip flop - I almost lost it to the next wave.
It was a good day a the beach today - we also found this large squash in the water which provided about an hour's worth of entertainment (and a bit of a snack) for our pretty pup:

And yes, I must confess that my first thought on sighting the squash was to take that home and grill it as well - alas, both items are still at the beach and we're stuck with left-overs tonight.

Seeing that you are in NY (Atlantic ocean) that would be a Atlantic Salmon. They are the ONLY salmon native to the northern Atlantic ocean. Chinooks aka king salmon are pacific species.

We are actually near the great lakes, a few hundred miles from the Atlantic. Which brings up the question I think I will finally ask, no question is a dumb one right? What Salmon species do we have in our area and what are their migratory patterns?
