Nudibranch

Nudibranch

There are so many different types of Nudibranch and they usually eat one kind of coral or another. Some eat specifically toad stools others only zoas. If it were my tank I would get rid of it to the sump or the LFS. I love the way they look but I would not chance it, and that one looks like the kind that eats soft corals. Sorry not a good answer and yours obviously like hard corals, I have done so many searches for them and it take alot of time and sometimes you can not even find the specific one you are looking for, may look alike but not quite. Good luck.

Not so, sorry. This one isn't even a nudibranch although it is a sea slug. It's a saccoglossan in the genus Elysia. Saccoglossans are all algae eaters; most feed on green algae and are very specific in their eating habits. It would only have been on your chalice because it was moving about searching for food.

Sea slug

Sea slug

Yep you are right, after going and doing my research it is a type of Sacoglossan (sap sucking slug) and they are herbivores. WOW, alot of info on them and really interesting stuff, regarding being solar powered! The general consensus is that no Nudibranch are herbivores. So the fact that it's a Sea slug that does not eat corals is good. Thank you for the information, learn something new everday.

I looked through some images of the family Elysiidae, and didn't see anything that it immediately matched up to, but these slugs can vary in appearance somewhat. But they are great animals.

I would so keep it if I had enough algae to go around for it. I think they're pretty awesome little creatures myself

Yup, the confusion about "no nudibranchs being herbivores" is really a matter of people calling all the slugs nudibranchs. The sacoglossans are good guys, but they aren't nudibranchs.

Cheers,

Don

Thank you all for the help...I was worried so it went to a 5 gallon with liverock and stuff.
