I plan on buying a 3 inch foxface tomorrow.
Anything anyone thinks I should know before getting this guy?
I have read he is real hardy and stay away from the poison fins.
Thanks

The tend to be afraid of everything at first. Up to the point when you put them in the tank, they can lay on their side like they are passed out!

It might also take a bit for it to come out and be more exposed than regular fish & can show dramatic differences in color than what they should look like....they really are chickens for the most part!:D

Mine likes to eat the nori with my tang....And although he is a big chicken....he is one of my favorite fish.

Adding more fish, especially larger fish, will add to your nitrates. If you really want your nitrates down, don't add more fish. Add more cured live rock, more flow and get a sump set up. It's tough to have a bunch of fish with no sump on your tank unless you want to go fish only. Then the nitrates don'we matter so much.

Absolutely. We have three systems on our basement that are not RR. You use an overflow off the back of the tank. Look around on the DYI forum. I'm sure there are plenty of examples.

mine too... you know how they are normally like a bright yellow? mine is always a pale yellow, almost a gray... even when he isn't camofloaged and hiding... thoughts?

The foxface will hold his own after he gets used to the tank. Give them nori every day unless you have a lot of macro in the tank. They are meant to graze all day. My foxface and kole tang are buddies.

Mike, how long have you had him?

Mine is a goofball and a pig. My scopas is a little turd and will hound the foxface for his food. The foxface will grab a big hunk of nori and take off with it and the scopas will go after him and try to pull it out of his mouth, even though there is other nori available. If he gets away with it, he goes swimming off like "Yay, I won!", and the foxface, if a fish could roll his eyes, slowly goes over to him and yanks it back. After my foxface eats, he then will go to the top of the tank and gulp air and let it bubble out of his gills as he sinks back down. Not sure why he does that, but I've seen from some postings on RC that he's not the only one.

Mine actually kept getting sucked against the intakes for the powerhead. I took him back that day and am waiting on a bigger one.
My power brown tang was really aggressive towards the foxface.
Are they more agreesive tangs than others?

I just got him this past weekend from sensei87. I haven't seen him eat the nori, but my girlfriend says he eats it, but the juvinial Blueface Angel who doesn't eat it harasses him while he is eating it from the clip.

Other tank mates in the 72g bowfront are Bicolor Blenny (3.5"), Watchman Goby(4"), and 2 O. Clowns (2"). oh the foxface is about 5.5".

I am thinking of moving the angel to the 120, and the scopus to the 72. the 120 would then have Vlamingi Tang (5.5"), BlueFace Angel(3.5"), pair of Maroon Clowns (3.5" & 2.5") Lawnmower blenny (3") and Sixline wrasse (2") - maybe febuary time to get a bigger tank, for the vlamingi!

To much bioload? Thoughts on confrontations?

oh, well then definitely he's going to need more time to get used to the new enviroment and tankmates. Mine had nowhere near that much competition in with him and he was still timid for a few weeks. Just try to make sure he's getting food and no one is picking on him too much.

One thing with mine, he absolutely FREAKS OUT over a fish net in the tank. I can put my arm in there, my grabber tongs, whatever, and it's no big deal, but put a net in there and he flies around the tank with his spikes up, even came up out of the water a couple times he was spazzing so much.

Mine is a pig with nori. Freaks me out with those poison spines. He won't let me get the suction cup on the side of the tank and he's already ripping pieces of nori off. If I set a frag in there with some hair algae on it he starts eating before I get the frag down on the rock. A little scary.

oh yeah...if I don't just drop the nori in the tank but hold on instead, he'll come right up and rip it out of my hand.

I gave up on the clip because he always just rips the entire piece off of it anyway. Inevitably, it ends up going through a seio and we have tossed nori salad throughout the tank.

I let my Magnificent Foxface and Naso eat the nori from my hand. My Mag Fox does not do it to often, Naso does it all the time. The only fish that has every got me is my Naso, I was putting Nori in the tank and dropped the clip. I did a quick reach down and accidentally grabbed him. Those dorsal fins hurt like the place my avatar comes from. Won't make that mistake again.

Jfbhd4,
See if you can find a Magnificent. I like the color a lot better. I took my yellow foxface lo back and traded him in. The magnificent has gorgeous colors

my female maroon clown and vlamingi tang (vlad) were eating nori out of my hand this morning... I attach it to a half a clam shell and drop it in every morning. but before i could drop it, there she was eating (not just attacking) and then vlad came up and wanted some too!

Next time you add the new fish try it at night after the fish have been fed and the lights are off for the night. It may help the new fish get in the tank without being harrassed.
