does anyone know when the next mars frag swap will be?~)

if anyone were to plan a private (non-club) swap i would attend!~)

shawn!~)

We as members could probally plan one ourselves, just get a bunch of people to commit to coming and we could all meet at a local park. If we do have a swap anytime soon, I'll be sure to attend. :)

The MARS frag swap is typically in October. BAR has their frag swap in Jan/Feb timeframe. Both MARS and BAR used to do two frag swaps per year (total of 4 frags swaps), but I think people were getting frag swapped out, so both clubs went to a single swap a year. I don't think the single swap per club is an official decision though.

Judging by the number of coral sales on the mars forum, I'd say it's time for a swap. People are so much more willing to give away stuff during swaps, which is great for the hobby. Even if we don't get that great of a selection with two swaps a year, I think it's better for bringing in new people. How many new people do we get with each swap? And just how many people from our club went to the BAR swap? I think 2 swaps a year is still good, since Bar has gone to one a year. 3 a year between the two, sounds good to me. Of course I don't have to plan this stuff, so ultimately it just depends on if the officers can do it.

Xia -

It shouldn't depends on if the officers can do it. Most of the club officers (including Rich, Pam, James, and Jeni) were very active in planning the WMC. There were also quite a few non-officers who were part of the WMC planning committee. The time committment to putting on the WMC was great. The planning took a 1.5 years and toward the end, we were meeting on a weekly basis - not including the 20+ emails we sent to each other on almost a daily basis. One of the member also drove 1.5 to 2 hours for each meeting (assuming there was no snow). I think all of us who were on the WMC planning committee are enjoying our slow time. :D For the most part, most of us enjoyed being on the WMC planning committee - but now we're all enjoying our slow time. :D

I recommend that if the members are interested in doing a frag swap - they go ahead and get volunteers to plan it.

I know I joined because of the swap, I mean the meetings are cool and all, but the swap...now thats the icing on the cake.

2 swaps a year would be good..... one in april and one in sept/oct

I joined for the frag swaps also, But I like the ability to use the club library. well also the LFS discounts... I can go on and on....

Interesting... I thought I join MARS because I wanted to support an organization that has given back so much to me. Even if there were no frag swaps, I would join the club just to hear the speakers, buy/sell/trade corals with other members, and to get the support of other members. If it wasn't for this group - I honestly think I wouldn't have been in the hobby for more than a year. Yeah - the frag swaps and LFS discount are nice - but that's not the reason why I joined. I joined before I even knew there was such a thing called a frag swap.

Seriously though - if you guys want to put on a frag swap, get a committee together and do it. :D

For the past two years, we have had a swap in April and October, this April with the WMC going on, we decided to wait until the fall to have a swap. In the future we may try to have two a year.

It is hard for those with corals that bring alot of frags to a swap to always have enough frags for two a year, so all of those who want swaps, start fragging your own corals so there are alot of people bringing frags. This is the only way they will continue to be successful.

I think 1 swap from each of BAR, NVR, and MARS is more than enough each year. The thing I don't like about the swaps is that all of a sudden here are a ton of members that you've never seen befor and won't again untill the next swap....

that is true, One person I spoke with said he was a mars member and only joined for the frag swaps... I was like ,hmmm ok...

I joined for many reasons, I even had a rough start here with MARS, but I still joined, that has to say something about the people and club....

WEll its my birthday today and im going home.... GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD REEFING

Your right Minh, I didn't realize that it takes a lot of work from a lot of people and not just the officers. Kudos to everyone who helped with WMC. You did a great job and you deserve some time to relax.

Forgive me for generalizing, but most people do begin just thinking about what they can get, but as you grow in the hobby, you should also learn that you need to give back. Minh's got the right attitude.

As far as getting a committee together, wouldn't we be stepping on some toes? How should this thing be initiated?

Cool, make it so.

Looks like the President gave you the old Jean-Luc Picard go ahead. Even if it's just a mini swap it might be fun.....you could just have whoever is interested meet at a park for lunch or something. It doesn't even have to be an offical club swap if you want it that way...

Somewhere central for everyone. Like mcckinley park off E st I believe, on a saturday maybe would be best.

just some thoughts....

Thats what I meant earlier. Something as simple as this would be great.

Any event at a park would require us to reserve and pay for park use. Pam has been a gracious host of our swaps at her house and it has been great. Depending on the number of people attending it can be pretty hectic to manage even in a controlled private property setting. Once a year is very generous. When Kent Aquatics was setting up, they talked about alowing room for meetings and swaps. Anyone know if that ever happened? I could help out with some calls or maybe organizing a small swap/sale session before or after a regular MARS meeting.

Actually, It would not be required for it to be paid to be reserved, If on the day you choose it is not reserved, it is open to first come first served.

Example.... My daughters birthday. They wanted $50 to reserve a section at a park on pope st in Sac, If the area was not reserved, then it was on a first come first serve basis. This was thru the fulton-El camino parks district. Now mckinnly isnt thru that park district, but its a county park, so the same should Apply.

I had my wedding at Mckinnly Park in the rose Garden, It was small, but no permit needed.

The parks in Sacramento place flyers at the area's that are reserved fpr notice, No flyer=open to public.

Also
I have a clubhouse in my complex with kitchen for snacks and drinks and seating to we could do it at Along with big screen for us to put some interesting Reef related movie.. I am able to reserve it till 11pm, just need a day...
