Please do not misunderstand. I am not complaining nor niave. I knew what I was getting into before I got started with this project. Scbadiver has helped me immensely through this entire process. Thank you very much, Scbadiver.

This endeavor began with a nice hit to the wallet on 3/20/06. MD and DFS received a nice chunk for the Euro Reef Skimmer, Iwaki pump, and Orbit lights. A week later the local plastic shop received another bit for the acrylic to build the sump and the overflow. Also, that weekend the local hardware store got a piece for the materials to build the stand. At this point, I was $860 into this endeavor with simply a stack of materials and equipment. Water was not much of thought at this point other than how many leaks is this going to have when it is finished.

The weekend of March 25th, we designed and built the stand. There were no major problems. It was more of taking what Scbadiver and I had in mind and making it work. All things considered it took about a case (or two) of liquid entertainment but it turned out really nice.

The next weekend, April 1 & 2, we constructed the sump. Well, I did a lot of gopher stuff (mainly getting the beer) while someone else did the majority of the work. He wanted to build what I had designed is probably more accurate.

We water tested the tank the end of April. The stand held and the sump did not crack, fall apart, or leak. We did determine that the overflow could not handle the volume of water so instead of restricting the pump we tore out the overflow to rebuild. Itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s a learning experience, right. It is not about the money it is about the knowledge that you gain in the process. Yea right, what ever. The price for the new acrylic for the new overflow was $30.00 and an hour and a half of work plus a 12 pack or so.

There was a two week break so I could take a trip to the Dead Sea/Jordan for ten days. Great place to visit and the people are super. We than water tested the tank/plumbing again. The new overflow worked great and the only leaks were from plumbing that had not been glued as of yet.

To date, the free 75 gal has only cost a little over a grand. The rock was ordered to be delivered next Thursday so the cost just went up another 350. However, the R/O water will start flowing tonight and the rest of the weekend and in another 5 days the really fun stuff will begin. Thanks again Scbadiver.

Future posts to comeââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦..

Well you are more than welcome. Its been a fun project up to now and it's about time you start getting this thread put together! :)

Thanks for the great story! It is a lot of fun setting tanks up...I spent about $8000.00 on my old 120g and it was worth every penny:lol: Now that I am setting up a 375g and 470g pair of tanks I don't keep track any longer:D

The basement project, bar project and cabinetry are nearing completion...hopefully in a couple months it will look like it is ready for saltwater too. Keep us updated on your progress.

Did you paint that stand with metallic silver paint?

Dave

No, at the time of that photo the stand was between coats of paint. It had been sanded and that is why it has that metallic look to it. The stand, tank, and lights are all satin black. The tank is from Scbadiver. It is actually the one I sold him a long time ago when we first met. It was a wood grain Oceanic. Still Oceanic just not wood grain anymore. In the next few days, I will have an update with some more current photos.

Scbadiver. Nice pic you have there. Who took it? It looks similar to one I have seen elsewhere.

Just a couple more photos of the system as it was when we did the original water test at the end of April. Since than there has been a few minor changes to the set up.

This last weekend, I got it up and running for what should be a long time. Does anyone have any suggestions on eliminating micro bubbles? I was able to eliminate the majority of them by placing the sponge block in the sump but I would prefer not to leave this in all the time. There is still more than I would prefer in the tank even with the sponge block.

This afternoon I received an email from DFS/Liveaquaria that the rock is on the way and should be here soon...... Hopefuly it wont be a 2 boxes of baseball sized pieces.

Don't worry too much about the micro bubbles at this time. Give it a couple months to settle in and slime the tubing up. I used to get them collecting on the acrylic and would clean them off daily but it stops after awhile. Now if you see them shooting out in a large volume then check for holes etc. or leaks where it may be making a venturi action. Maybe throw some cheato in there to block the bubbles if you have a place to grow it.

Thank you Roy, Perhaps a third party endosement will help me. I've said the same thing numerous times but he won't, or doesn't want to believe me! :) ARE YOU READING THIS DIVEDOG? LOL!

Roy... Thanks for the input. It has been years since my last fish only salt tank was running so a lot of those little things have been forgotten. I have never had what you would consider a real reef tank so my learning curve is very large currently.

Scbadiver... Are things just going a little fast for you today or are you always this slow. It is not that I do not believe you it is that I choose not to listen to you when you were speaking that day.

PS... Are we building the doors for my stand tonight??? It looks incomplete.

My rock just arrived (at work), however, I took a peak at what was inside. So far it looks great. The Tonga was overweight by 11lbs. and the color was super (pink, purple, orange, green algaes). The fiji was pretty much the same with some added macros. Neither box appears to have much rubble. I wont know that for another 4 hours until I get home from work though.

This is like Xmas in June.

FYI... Scbadiver and I have been friends for going on 20 years so yes you may see some playful bantering in post regarding us.

Update

The LR has been in the tank for a little over a week and all appears well. Added a small Perc this last weekend. It was like watching grass grow without a bit of movement in tank. Also, we finished the doors this last weekend and got those installed. Currently, it is a lot of watch and wait but thats ok. It is still a new toy and a nice addition in the house.

The electrical panel was constructed last night. 15Amp, 4 outlet w/ Gfi. It will mount inside the stand on the back just below the tank. It needs to be painted & wired. It will be up and in service by the weekend.

I forgot to mention that the electric went out for about 2 hours yesterday while I was at work. When it came back on everything in the tank restarted the way it was figured. No damage to anything. TG.... One mystery solved by accident.

"Current Tanks: 75 Gal., 125 In planning / construction"

And so the addiction begins. :D The 75 looks great by the way.

You're right Jack, "the addiction begins" but he only has the plan, I "get" to do the construction in my spare time :).

Thanks...

Chelsey, see what I mean? I would love to borrow your expertise in photography to fix my little dilema.
