Free to good home

* I am not sure I am in the right place. If anyone deletes this, I won't be offended. I don't want to accidentally break any rules. *

A fellow reefer directed me to this forum as a good place to unload a mantis shrimp. I have great respect for these little guys, and have come into contact with them before but never kept one for very long. I pulled one off of my live rock a few days ago and quarantined it. I do not have the resources to keep it right now, so if anyone wants it, it is free to give away. It is in good conditions and I think it has both raptoral appendages.

I do not know for sure what species. I think it is a 'smasher' as opposed to a 'spearer'. (It came out of LR, not sand or mud, and is smaller and more colorful.) Any ID is welcome. It is over an inch long, probably closer to two inches.

Here are some pictures:

In order for me to give it away, someone will have to either pick it up, or prepay for shipping somehow. It was shipped to me in LR and is doing just fine. It loves PVC and I will transport it in its favorite tube.

Someone can pick it up in Springfield, Missouri. This is a (relatively) large city and I go to grad school there so I will be there several times a week.

If you are interested, email me please at mohazell(at)earthlink(dot)net or reply to this post.

Although i have no room for another mantis, im glad to see your being extremely responsible about the situation, instead of flushing them like some people do, means alot to me

Woot is that a peacock? Anyone know what species this is? Im looking for a smasher, can you tell me anything else, size personality etc. Is it eating, colors etc. Im really interested.

i dunno what species they are but ill tell you it isn't a peacock. has some nice colouration in some places though.

I discovered the little guy very quickly after I got the rock. At first I was a little ambivalent, but then I finally decided I had to get rid of it, lest it get big and start picking off my snails and stuff. Before I took it out, I try to placate it by offering shrimp with tongs to keep it from hunting my mithrax crabs. It took bits of shrimp almost instantly and pulled them into its hole. I offered more, and it pushed some out and used others to block the entrance to the hole. I have not fed it since, and that was about two days ago. I plan on feeding it again today. I didn't think it would eat while it was all stressed out from the transfer.

It is shy and passive. It once popped the tongs while I was removing it to quarantine. I was using the tongs to arrange the PVC when it smacked them. It is inquisitive as well, and when I took it out for photos and put it in an old ice cream container it would run out of its tube and around the container and back again.

That's pretty much all I can tell you about it. I posted another picture. It popped my tongs again today when I tried to shoo it into a cup.

I just can't bring myself to 'get rid of it for good' because I know people out there really like these things and I am a big softie.

Shipping to 38382:

Overnight: about $30 to $60 from FedEx, depending on method.
UPS is 35 to 40$
USPS is about 30-35 but arrives in '1-2 days money back guarantee'

My zip code is 65536 if anyone wants to figure it out for yourself.

Again, this guy is free to anyone who can pick it up in Springfield, but if someone wants to ship it they will have to pay for that. They can prepay, if that's possible, or I can bill shipping to you or you can send me a check and I even have a paypal account. I will send you back the change if you overestimate. I don't want to make $$$ off of the guy, I just want it to have a good home where someone can care for it properly.
