Fridmani Pseudochromas or Royal Gramma??

Help!! I am looking for a peaceful fish to add to 29 gallon. I was about to get a Royal Gramma or a Black Cap Basslet. Then I read that they are a deep water fish, love caves and hate bright reef tanks. So they will hide all day. The Fridmani Pseudochromas is supposedly a peaceful Pseudochromas and they like bright lights. The majority of Pseudos are nasty.. Please give me your comments if you have one of these guys. Thanks. R.

The fridmani should be fine. I have had one for a year and has been a model tankmate. Mine and the others that I have seen or owned have been nothing like thier counterparts like, flavertex/sunrise dottyback, neon dottyback, or splendid dottybacks. I think this fish would be a great choice for your tank.

Thanks for the info. How is the Fridmani as it matures?? It is a good looking fish when it is young, is the mature fish as good looking?? R

I have a mature female and imature male in the same tank... wasn't easy ... any way as long as you are carful not to add other baslets or wrasse that are similar body types you should be OK. My famale desimated a candy hog before I could remove it but has been fine with clowns, coral beauty, hineochus BF and gobies.

The male is to the left ... it's really hard to get them both to stay still for a pic!

They are not a pair yet but they are tolerant of each other

My family loves these fish!

lucky you. my 8 month old fridmani is now up for adoption. it chases my yellow corris, firefish and anthias. it was a nightmare trying to catch it. it is now on my sump where it can be easily caught. i would love to give it to you rick, too bad you're halfway around the world. lol!

Jolt26--so you do you think a Royal Gramma or Black Cap Basslet plays any better with tankmates?? I am just looking for a nice fish to go with a clown, a Carpenter's wrasse and a gobie. Once this thing is in the tank it's there until it dies--one way or another. R

I had a blackcap basslet and it got along well with my pair of clowns and carpenter's wrasse. It did spend a lot of time hiding in its little cave, but always came out for feeding time.

There are also tank raised firmandi's available, which are said to be more peaceful. Just be sure you are educated on the differences between the firmandi and purple pseudochromis, they look similar and I've seen both mislabed. The purple has clear fins, and the firmandi has purple fins, and the black mask.

I've been considering which one to get as well, I've been missing the splash of purple swimming in my tank...just my $0.02

The royal gramma is a great peaceful community fish. But that fridmani is beautiful. But the gramma is a sure bet to be peaceful.

yes rick. the gramma loreto will surely play better. with the fridmani, it is a gamble, although some get lucky :D it is undeniably a beauty though. i miss it's glowing, radiant purple color already :(

just make sure you get the royal gramma, not the brazilian gramma. the brazilian has no black slash thru the eye & is much more aggressive.

From that picture, it looks like you don't have a Fridmani, but a much more aggressive Pseudochromis porphyreus (Magenta/Purple Dottyback). A side view of the fish would be more helpful in identifying it.
