Friend or Foe...Snail With No Shell?

SkullV

They Got My Number
I have noticed this purpleish snail guy wandering the tank at night but today was the first time that he was out in the daytime. Anyone have any idea what he is? Should I get rid of him? I certainly didn't add him!

Yeah you deserve a break with something good going on in a tank.

Maybe other people can weigh-in with their experiences but my peppermint shrimps (and cleaner shrimp I think) ate these and they are no longer in the tank :( Just something to consider.

Great snails. They do have a shell if you observe closely but it's a semi shell, like a fingernail and it's cowl can cover it.

Anyone have extra I'd be happy to take some! :D

Ha, Eric if they breed like you say they do I'll have some for you pretty soon.

While were on the ID thing...how about this guy? I didn't know if it was a pest or not so i removed it but it can go back if he's a good guy.

Collonista snail, also a good addition. They will also breed in your tank according to the food supply & mostly graze at night.

I've had a lot of stomatellas now & in the past, and never had a peppermint or cleaner shrimp eat them. However, I make sure ALL of my inhabitants are fed so they don't have to resort to eating other inhabitants.

So now I know I have at least 2 of these Stomatella guys. Do they reproduce sexually or are they asexual?

As soon as the lights go out in my 55 gallon reef, the Collonista and Amphipods come out and take over like crazy!

And whenever I clean the micron filter sock, I try to save as many as I can. They seem to LOVE to live in there!

Well there are a ton of Stomatellas in my system now so there must have been a couple male/female mating sessions going on.

Tonight I lost one of these poor souls to my MP10 though. Heard a terrible noise coming from the MP10 and when I went to look I saw a fingernail (shell) flying away and the snail flew right into the open tentacles of my Bleeding Apple Scoly. Lucky Scoly, nice meal.

Yea I used to have plenty of them as well a while back. I didn't really know what they were and thought they were bad so I took them out by hand. I used to do this every night and no lie took out 20-30 of this a night for God only knows how long. I wish I hadn't cause they are a very good addition to the tank. I have one here and there but nothing like I used to. Maybe they will reproduce again
