It is time, we as a comminuty need to step up and help each other.

As we have tragically seen with Sniper and several others, power outages are the death of out beautiful tanks.

What do you think of a plan where we Voenteer our tanks, our our power to help others out, when in need?

I would see it something like this...

We all sign up, show what kind of setup we have, how much open space we can create, possibility of setting up an additional tank for others.

When someone loses power they contact the list, find poeple near them that are avaliable and move some of their more expensive and delicate items from their tanks to ours. They ride out the outage with a reduced stress level.

What you think? I could go and set up a website/community that for this pirpose only, what you think?

It looks like we are through the worst of this for now, but August and September are still to come.

That's a really nice idea. I would be willing to help a reefer out if I can.
They probably wouldn't want to put any of there nice stuff in my tanks.
Sounds good to me.

Sounds great!! I think you should include people (and places) with portable generators available for borrowing or renting.

I have 10 gallons of space, but only 18 watts of lighting. Can hold whatever fits in there for anyone :) I can also host stuff if it needs halides, but they will have to be small as i am really tight for space. I am located in 90006 so if anyone needs a hand let me know.

yeah ill join.. i have a back up generator and can go weeks without power...

i am always willing to help fellow reefers as i have a large tank and can fit tons of corals in there... all my sps are frags as i am growing them out like Hugo....

How many KW is your back-up???? Setup for 220?
Do you pig-tail into the main on 220 or just use ext. cords????
???? for Bebo77 (Gabriel)

for most of you all know i have a store front. So in case of anything happening, you guys are more then welcome to bring the corals in and i will have a section off to set your corals in my system. I just hope this will help and prevent anymore tragic from happening.

I’ve been very weary about what I put in my tank. Considering all the bugs we have going around it would be like sleeping with a stranger unprotected. A buddy and I just decided to pitch in and buy a large gas generator. Odds are only one of our houses would loss power at any point in time. Also it would be very hard to find someone that can take all of the corals in my tank. I would imagine I would need at least 5 people to spread it all out. Maybe in addition to your plan having everyone pitch in a few $$ to buy a few generator would be ideal. Also maybe instead of just baby sitting corals and such you could have a list of people who can watch over each other’s tanks while people are on vacation. The last I idea may need some more thought but cant heart to put it on the table.

Anyway I should always have room in my prop tank if anyone needs it. Only thing is no zoos and no sps. I also have 60gal worth of room for fish.

Thats very, very generous of you.

Nice thread in general. I can host in my 220 but I'm in Hesperia

I have one big generator that I used to take camping. It runs on gas.

We were able to connect TV's, radios, microwaves, etc...

My neighbor has one twice the size and Im sure you can run some PC's, T5's return pumps all on the same unit.

I have a 110g with lots of room for corals, and peaceful fish. with 350w of MH. I can hold corals for anyone.

Add me.

The problem is that if you leave for 2 days, and the power is out while you're gone, you won't know it. That's the problem; you come home to catastrophe. And even if you somehow knew it, and could call a friend, how would they get into your house?

If you are home when the outage occurs then you could just use Reefcentral to find people to help, if you didn't already have reefer friends nearby, (like most of us do).

I don't know if a short term power outage is really an issue, we had a few 1-2 hour blackouts back in Feburary at my house and it was no issue to the tank. SO how do you know? When the lights go out, how do you know if it's just a few hours, or it's going to be a few days? I suppose you could call the power company. Edison likes to work on the power to my community at night time. Often between midnight and 5:00 AM my street will lose power for 5-10 minutes. It always interrupts my video game playing.

i'm just not too concerend about a power outage when I'll be present. I'd just either get a battery powered air pump or I'd call you Bryan :)

I'm worried about what's happening to my tank when I'm not at home.

Just use your Treo to find the site, then call for help. LOL

That is why my AC3 is connected to the UPS, eith my router, and modem. They theory is that I will get the e-mail when the main power to the AC3 goes down.

I have much testing to do for this situation.

There are lots of logistical issues here...Communication withen the group would be necesssary, cell phone numbers of friends that parcitipate.

Good concerns, I am also worried about legal concerns.

Say you put your stuff in my tank, my tank crashes due to load or my own power failure, am I liable for your stuff now? I have lots of concerns...maybe this needs to be left to close friends helping each other. I don't know yet. But it sounds like this could be an interesting discussion.

Very good point Bryan! There have been times when I have kept newly aquired livestock for friends and it dies. It feels really bad to hold something for someone and have it die on you. Of course when I ask a friend to hold one for me and it dies, I don't blame them for it. Not intentional.

In this case, if you hold a specimen for someone, you don't really know that person well enough to know how they will react. That is, after all, their money you are holding! The legal issues are definately a concern.

It would definately be nice to have a group like this to help out the fellow reefers though.

Great idea. I have a 180 SPS tank with space to spare in the main tank and a refugium with extra space. I also have a generator for backup. Check my current tank description it might match or be close to some others! HTH, Sean.

I just set up some battery-powered air pumps, the kind that turn on automatically when the power goes out. That should keep things OK for a few hours in my tank. Next I plan to set up a UPS using a car battery to operate the pumps and powerheads.

What is the longest outage you've seen this season?
