From Cigarette sticks to SPS sticks

Hi guys,

I am starting project X-Stick and the idea came about when I suddenly visualise my cigarette in my hand as a SPS frag. I thought to myself, if i dont smoke a week, I probably can get 1-2 sticks of SPS frags to add to my tank! And so I am now currently going to execute this plan....

To slowly convert my tank to a full SPS tank. And every frag, every equipment, every fish will be funded by the reduction in buying the cigarette packs.

And so I need the fellow SPS pros and experienced reefers here to give me ideas on how to convert my current setup (of 1 year) into a full SPS setup.

My main idea is to have a 90% SPS japanese style tank (bonsai type) with just 2-3 nice fishes and maybe a few inverts.

Current setup and equipment is:
1. 2.5 feet 4- gallon tank sumpless.
2. MP10 wavemaker x 1
3. Maxspect razor 160w 10K version
4. MCE300 skimmer
5. AC70 HOB for chemical filtration.
6. Cooling fan.

Main questions to ask the fellow pro reefers here:

1. I have a 3-4 inch sandbed. Better to go BB? If yes how to go about doing it?

2. I have dead rocks that I intend to create the bonsai structure out of tank. How do I introduce into the tank with minimal cycling?

3. Any other equipment recommended to make it work? (Apart from a sump as I cannot cannot afford to go with a sump)

Any recommendations for the 2 - 3 special fishes that goes well in a SPS tank?

Good plan and good luck. I'm going on 3 months now!!! Bartletts Anthias, Yellow, Purple or Scopus Tangs, I love Firefish also. Rock I'm not sure, I have not had good luck with dry rock. It takes forever to cure. if you are going dry rock get a GFO reactor.

OMG I also have done something similar to your experiment I started using the E-cigs 3 months ago and quit smoking all together that same day and started using these vapor cigs which have no tobacco just water like 3 ingredients with the nicotine included. I went from a pack a day at 7 bucks a pack to using these which cost like 10 bucks a week if that and saving a ton ,sorry for the hi jack just excited you to have found a way to convert your quitting smoking and using the savings for something like this congrats on that hope you can also stop smoking all together more time and money for this crazy hobby...all the savings add up but somehow i am still broke at the end of the week lol...but will have a stunning collection of corals ..good luck

haha good luck.

i know my tank has helped me immensely to quit, both with relaxation of being able to watch it, and giving me something to do to keep my mind and hands busy.

going on 7 months no smokes now (after 15+ years of smoking), and all is well.

make it happen, you'll be glad you did. :)

The 21st of this month will make 6 months of being smoke free for me (after 17 years!)! A good portion of the $150ish i'm not spending on cigarettes now goes towards my tank each month. Definitely a great reward for yourself AND your hobby!

I quit dec11, 2010 (about the time I went sps) and it was the 2nd best choice I've ever made. Your making the right choice. More power to you.

Actually vaping is somewhat still smokin but alot less bad for u..... I hope lol good luck bro I've struggled with smokin since I was 15

I'm screwed, I can't quit.... When I can't smoke I vap, then I make up for the lost cig by smoking more cig... Taxes on these thing are nuts. 8 bucks a pack sucks....

E-cig. My brother and I both quit in one day. Freakin miracle these things are. I like chocolate and peppermint but they even come in tobacco flavored. I use a V2 brand. I started with the strongest and the difference is you get the immediate feeling unlike gum and patches and also it gives you the same thing to do with your hands. I am down to the lowest strength now. I will never smoke burning tobacco ever again unless these become unavailable. I don't even want to. Good luck! And these come out to waaaaayy cheaper than buying packs as well after the initial purchase.

Good luck! A coworker quit smoking and is buying an Audi with the money she was spending on cigs. They're more expensive here in Canada!

It is not even comparable really. I would compare inhaling nicotine vapor to a cup of coffee maybe. Compared with smoking burning material of any sort along with tobacco and the many other things added to cigs.....e-cigs are like nothing. On a level of damage a cig would be like 100 and an e-cig a 1.

I quit about 2 months ago, now strictly vape using a eVic. Try to find someone locally to get your juice from. It was tuff for me to find a reliable carto or clearomizer that was durable and have the hit I desired. Ended up with a smoke tech from myvapestore.com. If you wanna vape buy a good battery. Don't get the gas station pos.

Now, back on topic. I would slowly stray siphoning out sand during weekly or whenever u do a water change. Within a month or two you should have most out then pull the remaining rock and siphon out the rest. That's if you want to go bb, which I did and don't regret at all.

Im a retired asbestos removal supervisor, my chances of getting lung cancer are 200% greater then a non smoker, so whats another 2% or 3% knocked off if I quit.
