Frustrating Fish,Noob Picture Taker--Advice needed

Just following along, I just got my first DSLR. I have a tripod, remote, and WIFI SD card coming. I have the Canon T3I got a great deal off of Craigslist. Seriously thinking about this macro lens: Canon EF 100mm F2.8 L IS. That is a decent chunk of change so also thinking about the 90mm Sigma Macro as well. The camera also came with an external flash that mounts to the hot shoe, would this work for fish shots? I have read that using flash with fish is recommended.

I got tired of taking horrible shots with my cell phone!

I apologize, really not trying to hijack your thread. Just a lot of coffee and thoughts!

using an in camera flash or one mounted on top usually won't work because the glass will reflect the light back into the lens. maybe at an extreme angle. flash works best over the tank. you can use a wired or wireless flash. I use two overhead on a boom stand.

All those are blocked, plus I just want them in one place...
I can still move them to my phone or tablet and upload over the wireless guest account, just cant do it on their desktops anymore..

Thanks, your pics look good to me. I am completely and utterly new to the DSLR arena! I have just been reading a lot and know that I need a new lens for sure. I have the T3 (Not the T3i) with the kit lens and it won't go below F5.6 zoomed in, it can without zoom but then I can't get the subject I want in the full frame of the shot. That Tamron lens look like a good one and probably get the $100 50MM Canon as well.

Thanks Again!

I personally think that a 50mm macro would be too wide for aquarium photography, at least close ups like most people like. I personally prefer macros that give you good working distances. Think about it, higher you go in mm, the more space it allows you to work around the tank. 95% of the time, you can step back from a tank if you need to if you do not want a super macro shot. With a wider macro, when you want to get closer, you wouldn't be able to unless you were closer, which in theory means you would have to be inside the tank, and I don't know about you, but I wouldn't try that with my gear :lol2:

Sorry the 50mm would not be used for aquarium photography.

I don't think I could justify getting the Canon $800 dollar macro lens. I know it is great but I need to just take pictures and get the basics down. That is why I think the Tamron would be the best for me.

I agree with you. No one new to the hobby should be buying such an expensive lens. The kit lens (the one tha comes with the camera) is a good learner lens. However, you can get decent used lenses at a much more reasonable price range. For instance, you can get an older gen Tamron 90 for somewhere around $200-$300 depending on condition. That is a much better macro option, but if you plan on using the 50 for other things besides aquarium photography, then I encourage you to get it.

I am assuming you are on a cropped sensor? If so, the 50 is a good walk-about lens. I would prefer a 35mm personally, but 50 is a nice doubled up portrait lens as well. Good luck.

Yeah that is what I was thinking, I just don't think that I could get the most out of that lens. Yeah I am looking at used.

Yes it has a cropped sensor, basically just a basic DSLR to learn on. I may get another body depending on how much I use this one.

use the body you own as much as possible until you know that the one you own has limits that another body would not. I love bells and whistles too, but many times I reflect and ask myself how all those bells and whistles actually help my photography, and most times the answer is that it does not.

The only significant upgrades photographers can make is jumping from cropped sensor to FF, and upgrading glass. MP is not a huge part of photography unless you are a freelancer or a paid pro. 8MP can appease 80% of photographers who don't even print their work.

Just something to keep in mind.

p.s. if you can get a new body or a new lens, ALWAYS go for the new lens. Lenses do not depreciate like bodies do.

The biggest upgrade that I would like a swivel LCD screen when I live mode on a tripod. Other than that, everything else is just fluff for me right now. Even with that said I would never by the latest camera body, I would just buy used again. The T3 I have now is several years old and it was used maybe 3 times per the owner and I believe him as it is flawless!

I have a swivel screen, and while it wasn't a selling point for me initially, I appreciate it very much now. It is usually parked in, but when doing low vantage point shots, it is a real life saver.
