First off, if i could i'd keep him i would, since he's probably the healthiest moorish idol i've seen. But my existing one wont have it and beat on him for 3 days. He's fully recovered now that i've moved him to my frag tank. his streamer is growing back as well.
Eats spectrum and formula 2 pellets as well as prime reef flakes.

You guys probably think that the price is high but i had to purchase more than one to find a healthy one like him.

I've also checked to see if he's reef safe and as far as i know he's much much safer than the one i have in my display currently. I have him in my frag tank w/LPS, zoos, and mushrooms he hasnt even given them a look so i'd say he's pretty reef safe.

Pick up is in Orange. Price is firm. Thanks

THAT FISH LOOKS AWFUL... do the right this for the guy and donate him to the LB Aquarium... he will only die in someone elses tank rather then your own... out of 1731 posts... im sure you know by now the right thing to do.

i understand that the fish was not free to you by any means, and from your post i can tell you have killed quite a few in order to find that one that would live long enough to satisfy your hunger to house an EXPERT ONLY fish... im not judging your hobby experence... but from the way you describe it, good luck.

please do the right thing. :(

FYI...
a MI that activly eats is NO indication that he is HEALTHY... please dont get it twisted... i have done over 100 hours of reading, posting, foot work, & DONATING a MI to learn that it may LOOK "Healthy"...even ACT "Healthy" 1 day... then drop dead the next... as im sure you have already seen ur-self :(

salt e, not because you donated your MI to LBA it is what everyone should do and is "the right thing to do". why was it ok for you to experiment with the fish and not others? are you saying that you've found out just about everything about the fish with your 100 hours of reading, posting and footwork that nobody else should or can try?

i think you should share your knowledge about the fish then let him decide if he wants to donate or not.

Why is RC so full of arsey posters these days??!!

I am becoming really disillusioned by the rude and opiniated posts of late.

Have a look over on the MI thread. You can keep these fish in an aquarium. This knee jerk reaction when it comes to MIs is no longer accurate.

People are keeping them and understanding their needs. A lot of time and effort is being put into this.

That MI doesn't look awful. As the poster explained it had been attacked by his resident MI and since then he has nursed it back to health. From the pic it is not thin or pinched at all.

Matt

wow!

First off, salte i'd much rather would have had you pm me about this but since you want it on the thread that's fine. (another thread killed)

if you're wondering why his color is off it's bc the lights were off for about 30min prior to the picture and i turned it on and used the flash to show that he was eating then.

i agree that after you read the moorish idol thread you know EVERYTHNG about idols and that eating is NOT the only thing that makes them healthy. but i'd say it's a great start. I know that after your 100hours of "reading, posting, foot work, & DONATING a MI" you feel that you are Irwin reincarnated as "salt e the moorish idol hunter" but you're NOT. And just cuz you've read the threads and talked to some guy at the aquarium, that was obviously too busy for you, it doesnt give you the right to come on my FS thread and bash me.

BTW maybe you should find some sting ray threads to read, then you can be the stingray hunter as well.

have a nice day! :D haha freakin ridiculous

John, may be interested. I am setting up my 400G tank right now but do have a 190 set up holding my current fish. Let me talk to the boss about him. I'll get back to you.

Most every opinion expressed with regards to the wisdom and ethics of keeping MI's in the home aquarium is rooted in some truth, however, often times it is based more upon what some have come to regard as irrefutable fact. That reason alone is why I have once again waded into this debate.

I acknowledge that the mortality rate of MI's is high, I do, but contrary to absolutely everything said in the aforementioned posts my MI continues to thrive (and I mean thrive) in my aquarium. I am not feeding him some exotic sponge, some special sponge, some special home recipe or some mystery food. I have been feeding him Formula II for all this time and apparently that is nutritious enough for him to be able to thrive in my tank. And let's not forget all my healthy tangs, Powder Blue included.

Now some of you are going to say, "Now just because your MI is eating doesn't mean that he is healthy. He may be alive today but he could drop dead tomorrow!" With all due respect I find comments like that rather amusing because I have never seen a fish thriving one day and dead the next. It just doesn't happen. Fish do die, yes, but to make the assertion that MI's just "up and die" one day is absurd.

Still others may say, "Well, he obviously is an expert or he just plain got lucky." And to that I would have to respond, "no," to each. I am just a mediocre hobbyist who enjoys aquariums. There is nothing spectacular about my water chemistry. I don't even have a water change schedule the way some of you do. I do change my water but not religiously. And the only three supplements I add to my tank are: 1) Fiji Gold Coral and Live Rock Supplement; 2) Iodine; and 3) Kent Marine Essential Elements. I don't even have a chiller on my tank.

I have not posted this to be arrogant or condescending for I am not and, if I have offended anyone I apologize. I think most of you are good people with good intentions. With that said I do however see some of you as wearing the label "expert"; you are indeed revered by your fellow reefers and you enjoy those complimentary moments when your opinion is decreed as fact. But you err in passing judgment on your fellow reefer simply because YOU failed and YOUR aquarium was inhospitable to MI's. Maybe you have no personal experience with keeping MI's and have no desire to ever attempt it because of your ethics but that doesn't entitle you to discourage someone else from attempting it.

I have seen some proud and boastful posts here on RC about other topics and all it really amounted to was strutting and feather showing. It's like I said before, MI's are in abundant supply regardless of their mortality rate and they are being bought. I find it really hard to believe that every MI ever sold has followed your script of purchase, into tank, then death. I knew one guy that kept a pair for almost 5 years until they died because he had a blackout in his neighborhood and had no flap valve on his return pump. All the water reverse siphoned onto his floor, killing ALL his fish.

There are those of you who will persist in dispensing your "expert" advice even when none has been solicited. Still there are others of you who will employ moral analogies ie; comparing buying a fish (in this case a MI) to stealing money or proptery from an unlocked vehicle in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Buying a MI is not the same because your actions don't constitute criminality as opposed to robbing a stranger. How someone could draw parallels between the two is ludicrous. Oh wait a minute, I know why...it's a "FACT" that a MI has absolutely no chance of survival in a home aquarium. That must be the correlation.

My success literally defies all your assumptions about this fish. As stated previously, MI's do have a high mortality rate. But since this fish is in such abundant supply shouldn't all of us be trying to change that? There are enough of us here in the So. Cal. forum to change the reputation of this fish from impossible to possible. I'm really surprised it hasn't happened yet since we have all these "experts" in our midst.

Now for the proof: Attached below your will find an old pic from May of my MI and below that 2 pics taken today of my MI. Enjoy!!!

Here he is back in May:

Fact: 99% Of all marine animals imported into the united states for saltwater aquarium hobby die within the first year.

Are we really in any place to talk about ethics and morals because we happen to be able to keep 1% alive past a year... Not to mention the minscule % that actually live there natrual lifespan.

If you enjoy the hobby do that, this guy has a MI that is feeding, thats hard to find. I say if your looking for an MI take advantage of this and get one you know will at least eat! (gl w/sale!)
