Hmmm, I wonder if they're sneaky enough to get thru half inch eggcrate.

They are basically blind and eat locate their food by their sense of smell. You pretty much have to put their food right by their mouth with a feeder stick.
They have been known to take a chunk out of fishes but it's primarily by accident because of their poor eyesite and the fish getting in the way during feeding time. They are notorious for carpet surfing and if there's an opening they will find it.
Thanks, great idea....I've got a couple of rolls somewhere in the garage, too!Originally posted by ®eefer
I would use gutter guard to block him in....all mesh, black , looks clean, impossible to fit through.

I'm assuming they use the tank walls to help climb out.

Actually no,they are able to gain enough momentum to leap out of the tank on their own, even without a lengthy swim.Mine jumped out of a 36" tank and was about 13" long himself.

Mine jumped out once...found it on the floor in the morning completely dry. I picked him up, rigamortisis had almost completely set in bu he started to move just slightly...put him back in the water and he swam right away. They dont eat fish, only crusteaseans, although he hasnt eaten my CB shrimp in over a year. I guess he learned his lesson because he never jumped out of that tank again. My new tank is impossible for him to get out.
