it is from my friends tank. its healthy and looks like a snow flake eel.

I can try to get pics, but it is a pain in the........
but if you require it, i'll get it.

sorry if im rambling.

It's going in the FO tank I recently set up...do these guys carpet surf? If they do, the only thing I can do is put some eggcrate over the tank.

They will carpet surf.

mine loves to swim up the output on my CPR hang on refuge and spend time in the refuge, then swim back to the main tank.

I have thin acrylic from lowes on top of my tank to keep him in.

Hmmm, I wonder if they're sneaky enough to get thru half inch eggcrate.

My feshwater eel was. Dont know if a SW one can do or act the same.

WarDaddy thats cool haha.

I've had a snowflake before. They will go through eggcrate. I had to put a acrylic cover on top of the tank with a small rock placed on top of it to weigh it down. Yes it used to be able to move the lid for it to escape lol.

They are basically blind and eat locate their food by their sense of smell. You pretty much have to put their food right by their mouth with a feeder stick.

They have been known to take a chunk out of fishes but it's primarily by accident because of their poor eyesite and the fish getting in the way during feeding time. They are notorious for carpet surfing and if there's an opening they will find it.

Thanks for all the advice, these guys sound like escape artist....I'm going to have to rethink my tank top if I get this guy.

I'm assuming they use the tank walls to help climb out. ...what if I use eggcrate over the whole tank with acrylic strips (like eurobracing) around the periphery of the tank. I would like to keep the middle open.

Mine jumped out once...found it on the floor in the morning completely dry. I picked him up, rigamortisis had almost completely set in bu he started to move just slightly...put him back in the water and he swam right away. They dont eat fish, only crusteaseans, although he hasnt eaten my CB shrimp in over a year. I guess he learned his lesson because he never jumped out of that tank again. My new tank is impossible for him to get out.
I would use gutter guard to block him in....all mesh, black , looks clean, impossible to fit through.

Actually no,they are able to gain enough momentum to leap out of the tank on their own, even without a lengthy swim.Mine jumped out of a 36" tank and was about 13" long himself.

Mine never did any carpet surfing... had him for over two years, but he LOVED to snack on any small fish that went into the tank. I had to get him out of the tank so that he didn't eat everything in there.
When I say small fish, I'm talking about fish that were 2-3". Some expensive ones too....
Ended up being about 3' by the time I had to give him away.

Yes!! That is exactly what happened...there's no way it was any shorter than an hour, he was stiff, dry and there was no puddle or wetness on the floor. He's still alive today, cool tankmate, when people come over the first thing they say is "cool eel", Not wow nice corals. LOL.
I read somewhere that they can be intertidal and are known to be found in hot, or dry tidepools. This all comes together with their jumping ability.
