Dumb question, how do these frag tanks work? Does it connect to a sump below it like a regular reef ready tank?

no, the water flows over the overflow into back chamber. Then the pump, pumps it back into tank. You can put media in the chamber for filtration if needed. I did have it running for a few months when I had to QT some corals.
