Fsurocks99's 40 Breeder

I was having the same problem once with my tek fixture, it was a bad bulb. replaced it and it worked. A year later it happened again when I replaced the bulbs, the 4th and 5th bulbs were not fiering and I took the light apart to see if it was an electrical issue... it wasnt. Finally I noticed that all the bulbs were not placed in the same "direction", I made sure all the writing was on the same side of the fixture and the problem went away. HTH

Thanks for the tips Acronic! Turns out it was a bad bulb.

Update:
I added a Pearly Jawfish two days ago. It was one of those fish that you see and know you want it, but say to yourself, "if it's still here next week, then I'll get it." I said that four weeks in a row. :D It was eating fine and was in and out of its burrow like normal. So, I took it home. Over the first night, it made a small burrow in the back corner. All is well, I thought... Throughout the day, I checked to make sure it was doing okay, but its tail fin was slowly being bitten off by something. Never saw the culprit (probably the yellow watchman or the pistol shrimp). Last night, I placed the jawfish in a betta breeder with some shells and rocks because it was hovering at the surface with its head poking out of the water, trying to jump out several times. Good news is, it is still eating, so fingers crossed.

I woke up this morning to an awesome surprise, half of the deepwater acro colony had RTNd. I have no clue why it happened. Nothing has changed in the tank...

How's the tank progressing, Jack? Did the pearly jawfish make it? I didn't have very good luck with this fish.

The tanks is doing well. We had some problems with the AC and of course we had one of the warmest week of this spring during it. I keep the tank on the cold side, ~76 F, but with the AC off, the temperature got up to 80-81 F on the warmest day. So, I'm still waiting to see the aftermath of it....

I'll try to add some pics this week, but don't hold me to it. It's the beginning of finals.

Unfortunately, the jawfish didn't make it. The starry blenny beat it up. Never considered the two having similar body shapes. I also lost the social wrasse. One day, he was missing a few scales. The next, his fins were torn up. Later, I found it running into the anemone because it didn't have enough strength to swim. Then, it disappeared...

I will say the fathead has some spunk. It seems to not like the yellow coris much. Ive seen them on a couple of occasions in barrel rolls. But, the fights don't last more than a few seconds.

Looks like I may have to start up kalkawasser, although, I don't want to. I'm having a lot of trouble getting my Alk to stay above 6.5dKH and my calcium is stable at ~350. But, I'm going to be going on a trip here soon, so I want to get the top off system (aquadoser) working again.

Yeah, you know things are cooking (in a good way) when you're having a hard time keeping up with the KH, Ca, and Mg. Out of curiousity, what's your Mg level? In my experience, a lower Mg level can affect the stability of your KH level. I'm also sure you know that even at super-saturation, kalkwasser eventually won't be able to keep up with your systems demands.

My biggest questions are: What are you dosing for Ca+, Mg, and KH? How often are you dosing them?

Great looking pics, btw! That first fungia pic is sweet!

Thanks, Yeah one day the fungia decided to go two-toned. Im still dosing tropic marin bio-Mg (1 tsp), bio-Ca+ (2 tsp), and baking soda for alk (1/4 tsp), every night. My Mg is stable at 1350.

Well, here are some ideas to ponder. TM's Bio-Ca+ contains carbonates in it already, which means it'll raise the KH as it raises the Ca+. This isn't a big problem unless the two are on opposite ends of the spectrum (i.e. Ca+ is low but KH is high). Right now, you're in good shape to use this since both your Ca+ and KH are both low. But, if you ever need to raise Ca+ independently, I'd use a Calcium Chloride product. Seachem's Reef Advantage Calcium is a readily available, easy choice. I'm sure you probably already know this stuff, but it's better to have too much information than not enough.

If you feel comfortable, I'd definitely increase your dose. I dosed about the same as your current dosing in my 30g. So, it wouldn't be crazy for you to go higher. I might increase all of the dosing by 50% and then test after an hour or so. It should mix before an hour, but it's always good to wait a little.

Kalkwasser's great, but honestly, before you go on your trip, I'd try to lock in a very solid dosing regiment that keeps your levels a bit higher. If you do this and can trust someone to dose accordingly while you're away, then I think you can feel more confident about leaving the tank for a bit. Just get them to dose and top off with water (already buffered in buckets), and everything'll be fine. There are quite a few things that could go wrong with aquadosers (what if it's clogged, not a big deal unless no one's paying attention). I hope I'm not being a 'know-it-all' (cause I don't, obviously! :p) or that I'm not stepping on your toes. I do feel pretty confident when it comes to keeping my levels locked in place; it's just the parasites that I HAVE to dodge. :lmao:

I agree. Better to have too much info than not enough. I do have the reef advantage calcium, just in case I run into that situation. I'll try increasing the dose like you said. I do have someone watching the tank, Im sure you remember Erik from F.S.

Hey buddy the tank looks awsom

Thanks!

Okay, so I doubled the doses Kasey, this is what i got:
New dose: 4 tsp of Bio-Ca, 2 tsp of Bio-Mg, and ~1/3 tsp of Baking Soda (I'm a little cautious with the baking soda, that's why I didn't double it)

Before:
Alk- 8.0dKH
Mg- 1350 ppm
Ca- 350 ppm

After new dose:
Alk- 9.9 dKH
Mg- 1350-1365 ppm
Ca- 365 ppm
