ft. lauderdale

I just got back Sunday night from ft. Lauderdale. I was actually south of ft. Lauderdale at Hollywood beach. Anyways I went to the beach and came back w/ about 20-30 lbs of coral skeletons. I found sps, lps, plates all from the size of an inch to a football sized piece. The larger pieces could be used as base rock. My in-laws told me they have found pieces the size of a basketball and were too heavy to carry back. It was my first time to that area and I was surprised at the amount of coral skeletons that wash up. Does anyone know how far the reef is from the beach? I will post pics of the pieces soon.

Really close. At the Lauderdale peir, where A1A is divided, you can do a shore dive. I would guess about 100 yards

Yep, first reef is as close as a few hundred feet.....second and third reef further and deeper. I'm heading to the keys on the 20th and am sure I'll find a few things for the tank while I'm there.....

Looking forward to seeing what you have there Steve.

not to change the topic or anything but how is that play sand doing in your 55?

it will make great base rock mike. I am going to go back in a few months and I am bringing my landscaping cart that has a several hundred LB weight capacity. I am going to snorkel off the beach to find the bigger pieces. I plan to return with at least 100lbs of it.

Nikonosis the play sand is great. I seeded it with some LS from my reef tank and everything is fine and healthy, I stocked the tank w/ about 18 soft coral colonies and half a dozen soft coral frags

thats great, i used some bfore with great results and was wondering if yours was treating you the same!

magic, i use to live in hollywood. theres a reef on hwood beach straight in front of the the band shell, 100 yds out , 10 ft deep. use to snorkel there all the time!

Thatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s cool. But I do not think I can swim 100 yards. Do LPS corals dominate the reef? I found more lps skeletons than I did sps

is it legal to take that stuff off the beach? Me personally I don't care if you do but I thought I saw some people talking about taking rock and stuff like that and someone said its not. Just don't want ya to get in trouble ;)

isn't the limestone rock that is all over the place at the beaches ancient dead coral? i know we aren't supposed to take rock.

Live rock is illegal to take, dead "base" rock is fine.....There's a link on another thread to the FWC site addressing recreational taking of aquarium species....

Hey, I'm in Hawaii right now and found this part of the beach that has a man-made inlet covered in coral rubble.
I'm thinking of bringing a couple of pieces back with me.
Here's a picture of one piece:

It's kind of dense, but should make good base rock.

Lucky you to be in hawaii, but careful with bringing stuff like that back.. They are pretty funny about what you can and cannot take home with you.

Yeah, I just wish the weather would cooperate.
Been here since Sunday and haven't seen the sun yet.
Lot's of clouds and rain.
Still, it's better than working!

I figured bringing dead "rock" back shouldn't be an issue, but you never know.
You can buy dead coral skeletons in the gift shops, so you would think this would be fine.

Hmm. Rain in hawaii or sunshine and work. :) Hopefully you will get some sun before coming home. I had a friend get in trouble for trying to bring a coconut home. Though my wife and I didn't have any problems bringing back anything.
