"I figured bringing dead "rock" back shouldn't be an issue, but you never know.
You can buy dead coral skeletons in the gift shops, so you would think this would be fine."

Yep can't prove if its from a gift shop, and a few pieces will be fine
Plus its interstate travel, = no customs inspection

Bringing stuff like that back from Hawaii is said to be bad hoodu. Seriously, it is supposed to be mega bad luck to bring anything natural back from Hawaii.

Ditto... Bad luck... Dont do it... You remember the Brady Bunch??? :D

Seriously though. It is supposed to bring you bad luck...

I dunno. Hey Grochamal what island are you on?

I'm on Ohau.
The weather could definately be better, but it's still paradise!
Here's a pic off my balcony this morning.

Yeah, we're staying at Marriott's Ko Olina resort beside the JW Marriott that you can see in the top right of the picture.
Have you stayed there?

grochmal are you back from Hawaii yet? Did you bring the dead coral back with you? Was wondering how your luck is going if you did! LOL

I'm not superstitious, but watched a show on TV a while back about people going back to Hawaii to return what they took from the island. It was about ppl taking black lava rocks from a volcano and from that point on had very bad luck and some had their lives ruined. A few that were on the show gave their 'befores" and "afters" and then how things got back on track once they returned the black lava rock to the base of the volcano.

When I saw the posts in Pelagic's thread (sorry for the highjack!) it made me think about that show where over the years hundreds of ppl have flown back to Hawaii to return the rocks they took.

Gee Jeff, Thanks for rubbing it in. Beautiful location, have fun and let us know more about your vacation when you get back. I assume you will go diving.

Yep, I'm back and I brought some dead coral with me.
No bad luck.
Yet :D

For the record, when you leave Hawaii you must pass through an Agriculture check point where they scan your luggage.
I asked them if there was any problems with bringing back dead coral and they guy looked at me funny and said "Nope".
Not sure how official that is, but I had no issues.

I didn't do any diving, but did some snorkeling.
The resort has 4 man made lagoons that are great for snorkeling since you can just walk out from the beach and go at it.
There were lot's of fish, and limited coral.
All the coral was brown, so not much to look at, but the fish were great.
Lot's of butterfly's and various assorted others.
I was hoping to see some yellow tangs but never did.

We went on a submarine tour which was mostly disappointing but did see lot's of fish on that as well, including yellow tangs.
The coral we saw there was all brown too.

I'm not sure how the diving is in general in Hawaii, but I'll be back so hopefully will try it next time.
