You just need some cheato, maybe some rubble rock (or larger if you have room and utilize it for additon filtration. For a sand bed to really have any efficiency it needs to be deeper than most fuges will allow so it's better left as seperate such as a dsb in a bucket style. Although surface area is important in remote dsb's and if you go read up on them, I think that is where the reason for the mixed results lie.

Chopped up snickers bars. I was going to go with Kit Kats, but too much dietrus got caught in it.

I used the mud for a bit in my other tank and I think it did an okay job, but there is no way to be sure. For the cost I didnt think it worth it.

I do. I almost have everything out. I should be done this weekend.
On the mud, I've seen an analysis that it is almost identical to a mix of sand and backyard clay. But, they do appear to work for many people. And it would be safer than digging the clay out of your own yard due to other contaminants that might be in the soil. But maybe not? I don't use it myself.
