Fuge w/sand - pull out Caulerpa or cut?

If I pull it out where it is rooted in the sand it makes a pretty big mess by pulling so much sand up. Should I just cut chunks of it out? It is growing like crazy. I think it is bringing my nitrates down nicely. From 1.0 a week ago to 0.2 today... But it's time to trim it back a little.

Well, I was worried that cutting it might cause the roots to die and make the sand nasty with a bunch of decaying roots in it. But I figure I'll cut it with some left above the sand so those parts will survive and produce new growth toward the water surface. Sort of like mowing an underwater lawn...
