Funniest/worst advice from LFS

alright, so I'll add the worst advice I heard..

Owner of a really nice reef store in a town I used to live in to one of his customers:

"You can't overdose iodine, just keep adding some"...

was told that if my ph drops below 8.4 to start buffering immediately... because according to the clerk all my corals would die at a ph of 8.1... i found that interesting considering NSW is usually around 8.2 ;)

Me: That Picasso trigger is really beautiful, I wish I could have it!
LFS: Well how big is your tank?
Me: 90 gallons but I already have a Niger trigger.
LFS: 90 gallons is a HUGE tank, you can keep whatever you want in there. Two triggers would be no problem!

Ha. Well, the picasso would have been a better fit than the Niger at least...

not necessary advice that I've received or been given but I'm always laughing to myself when I see a customer buying the full setup

55 gallon tank and stand on a cart by the register, canister or HOB filter, a bag of live sand, one or two dry rocks, a bag of instant ocean salt, a hydrometer, a heater
Then you see a bag with a clown trigger, yellow tang, pair of clowns sitting right next to it.

----------------------------

"I don't even run a skimmer on my tank"

*Looks at LFS DT*

*See's tank that is crashing, filled with algae, dead fish and STN/RTN Corals*

-Proceeds to explain skimmers benefits to Store Owner, who essential tells I am an idiot-

------------------------------

"I just started to dose my tanks" (After him being the Store Owner for 3+ years)

*Me thinking: 'Here we go again'*

------------------------------

*Walks in on Store Owner explaining how tap water is just fine for reefs*

10 years or so ago as a newb.....

Me: what is that sweet fish?

lfs DB: Lionfish

Me: Is is aggressive?

lfs DB: nope

... long story short... fish killed everything in my tank

This same store... I found out later this lfs was telling new reefer there salinity was too low b/c they were using hydrometers in the store and crashed many tanks and played dumb when people complained and told them to use only refractormeter to check salt levels... in krama news this store went out of business bc of major road work that happen right at the main entrance which made it very hard to get in/out of the parking lot

When a lionfish eats a fish, that is not aggression. Lfs owner was right ...lol
Aggression is what an emperor angel will do to a lionfish if he decides he doesn't like him.

Me: "I am looking for reef safe fish"

Owner: "here is a cool puffer, and I have some nice dwarf angels you could pick from."

Luckily I went home with my pair of clowns and that store is now closed.

Uh, my dwarf angels never mess with my corals, and I have lots of coral. But I have heard it's hit and miss sometimes on the dwarfs.

I started at a LFS in my area, that actually WOULD ask you about your systym, time, etc.
I was just starting out,
They would only well one SW fish at a time, etc.
One day- I walk in to same store- get some young girl (not a sexest statement btw) and she sold my 5 SW fish at once- (MY fault for doing it)
I mentioned the previous policy I was told at the same lfs, and she said,
'oh, it won't matter'
That was my first and LAST ich outbreak.
From experienced reefers, this place has a bad rep.

Now here in the MIlwaukee area, we are lucky enough to have a lfs that is awesome, has an awesome reputation, and has excellent sustomer service, etc. Best Fish

At an LFS I was told I can keep a mandarin goby in my newly setup 12g cube. I found out the hard way that was not the case. They mentioned nothing about keeping the food source. I hate that it's still a known LFS out here. Luckily we have a lot of LFS here and I have a couple other places not looking to make a quick buck.
