Future Fish List...what do you think?

I am upgrading to a 225 gallon (72" x 30" x 24") mixed reef and want to put these fish in...let me now what you think?

-Midas Blenny
-Mandarin Dragonette
-Lawnmower Blenny
-Pair of Saddleback Clowns
-Helfrichi Firefish
-Diamond Goby
-Yellow, Achilles, Powder Blue, and Powder Brown Tangs

(Maybe)
-Red and Purple Firefish
-Purple Tang or bluejaw trigger

Make sure your tank is up and running a few months at least before the mandrin. They are amazing fish but starve easily. I also had an issue with a lawnmower blenny nipping corals. the tangs are great fish but can be aggressive. I love my purple tang.

What sort of flow are you planning? Of the tangs, the achilles needs the most. As I understand it, they need very oxygen rich water, too.

With that size tank you can have a male and female blue jaw trigger. Achilles can be difficult. Purple tangs should be the last fish due to their aggressiveness.

Good diverse group and coloring.

This is just hearsay so take it for what its worth but I have heard the same thing about the powder blue and powder brown tangs together. I've also heard that the achilles is very hard to keep.

Ok, I wouldn't put powder tangs together in a 90 or a 120...but a 225? how big of a tank do they need? If I got them as small as possible (3-3.5") and put them in at the same time on opposite sides of the tank still no way???

Agreed with this, tried in a 175g tank and it did not go well at all.

Good choice on the blenny. I love Midas Blennys. They have so much personality.

Zebrasoma flavescens (Yellow Tang), Acanthurus achilles, (Achilles Tang), Acanthurus leucosternon (Powder Blue Tang), Acanthurus japonica (Powder Brown Tang), Zebrasoma xanthurum (Purple Tang).


Do you see the problem here? Choose one of each, Acanthurus and Zebrasoma and you'll PROBABLY be alright.

If you don't understand why then you need to do some more research. Yes, a 225 is big but so are tang territories.

Also, Helfrichi Firefish, Red, and Purple firefish will be problematic with each other. I would choose one type and stick with a mated pair.

I definately agree as far as the tangs are concerned. No more than one from each genus is the best bet. I'm sure others mix them all and they're fine, but I would be very cautious on this front.
I do however respectfully disagree with the "mated pair firefish" theory. Rarely works. Almost always end up with one firefish. Just peruse the Reef fishes forum.

I've seen them coexist in a tank smaller then yours, so saying no way would be just as big a fallacy as telling you that you will have a 100% success rate. I think more often than not, though, you would run into problems.

ok, great, thanks guys...I think I will go with an Achilles, Pyramid Butterfly, and possibly a Bluejaw trigger but I might go w something else cuz I know they're jumpers...

Achilles are some of the most finicky tangs out there, if you sneeze near your tank they get ich sometimes... Personally a blue jaw m/f pair would do great in a tank that size, but I'm pretty biased since I love those fish
