Future Fish List

Hi All,

Looking for some suggestions and comments on my ideas for future additions to my tank.

90gal with 65gal sump, total water volume about 130gal.
I have a very undersized skimmer but will be upgrading soon.
About 100lbs live rock, 60 in the display and 40 in the sump.

I have a few LPS, some soft corals, zoos and various mushrooms.

Current Fish
1 - One Spot Foxface
1 - Royal Gramma
1 - Yellowtail Blue Damsel
2 - Ocellaris

1 - skunk cleaner shrimp
1 - sally lightfoot crab
1 - fighting conch
some larger scarlet hermits
some small blue leg hermits
misc snails of all kinds

What I would like down the line.

mandarin dragonete (Synchiropus picturatus, Pterosynchiropus splendidus, or Synchiropus splendidus)

red/orange spotted blenny (Istiblennius chrysospilos)

Whitecheek Tang (Acanthurus japonicus)

Orchid Dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani)

Possibly a small angel, like a Flame or Coral Beauty.

Any compatibility issues?

If I got all of these I would certainly be pushing the envelope so I don't think I would get them all. The only must have is the mandarin.

Anthias?
Hawkfish?

Thanks for any suggestions for substitutions, recommendations, or comments.

Dave

I always chime in to recommend Hawks. My flame has the most personality in my tank. My wife loves him. He actually follows me around from one side to the other. I'll be doing something under the tank and look up, and it's right there staring at me with those googly eyes. Priceless. Should be ok w/ ornamental shrimp b/c they are already established (should being operative term).

What about a jawfish, also very lively and entertaining. Low on a problematic scale.

dave,

Royal Gramma + Orchid Dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani)+red/orange spotted blenny (Istiblennius chrysospilos)
may have issues particularly the gramma and orchid..

Acanthurus japonicus) , can either be a devil or a saint. mine was fine until he got bigger.

Anthias tend to need a lot of feedings, and tend to be shy if you have other more aggressive feeders like the hawk for instance.

mandarin dragonete (Synchiropus picturatus, Pterosynchiropus splendidus, or Synchiropus splendidus)

Whitecheek Tang (Acanthurus japonicus)

Coral Beauty. would probably work in a 90..

I shy from hawks because they can be detriment to corals by sitting on them.

can definatly agree with st. james, the royal gramma and the orchid will go at it, and even pester other fish of similar shapes. ever think about a potters angel (C. potteri) or a brazilian flameback angel (C. aurantonotus) for a choice of angel.

I was concerned about the orchid dotty, I'll scratch that one off the list.

I'll also scratch the Anthias.

I don't think my sandbed is deep enough for a jawfish.

I have considered other small angels.

Any other algae eating sand sifting fish that might work. I don't want anything that will compete too much with a mandarin for food so I want to stick with vegetarians.

That makes it:

Current Fish
1 - One Spot Foxface
1 - Royal Gramma
1 - Yellowtail Blue Damsel
2 - Ocellaris

falco 1 - skunk cleaner shrimp
1 - sally lightfoot crab
1 - fighting conch
some larger scarlet hermits
some small blue leg hermits
misc snails of all kinds

Possible additions

mandarin dragonete (Synchiropus picturatus, Pterosynchiropus splendidus, or Synchiropus splendidus)

red/orange spotted blenny (Istiblennius chrysospilos) ???

Whitecheek Tang (Acanthurus japonicus)

Possibly a small angel, like a Flame, Coral Beauty, potters, ....

falco or flame Hawkfish

What about a butterfly (longnose, copperband)?

dont scratch the anthias...lyertails are awsome...mine as well as nates is out all the time and i only feed once a day, as does nate, and he has a few different kinds of anthias. they have awsome colors and i would deff get over any doddy or gramma. also they arnt as aggressive as those 2 other fish.

I personally don't think a 90 is big enough for anthias, in my experience they need lots of swimming room, and some of them get pretty large, I have a 155 and didn't go with anthias , I went with chromies, and love them I have morrish idols powder blue tang blue spot jawfish, lineatus wrasse , and various blenny's and little gobies, anthias eat to much swim to much and fight to much , nothing looks better than a school of chromies in my opinion

that is interesting...IME chromis in a group seem to be way more aggressive than an anthias...they also eat just as much food as any other fish in the tank excluding small gobys and such.

Chromis are a natural schooling fish and don't battle for sexual dominice, anthias def do seeing how anthias change sex so much I've have had a couple square anthias change literally week to week it was the worst fighting I've ever seen, and as far a eating think befor you speak a 1 inch fish will eat way less than a 3 inch fish its common sense

a 3 inch fish eats mroe than a 1 inch fish that is common sence.... well i would def debate that, it is all luck because if the chromis sees a bigger piece of shrimp and gets it before the anthias the well it ate mroe that day...lol...but my anthias dont eat any more than a fish of its same size. also chromis do battle for sexual dominice. if you have your school for long enough eventually there will only be one or two left. they will kill of the weekest ones. they are very aggressive esp when feeding not only twards each othere but twards other fish. you apparently havnt had them that long becuase your chromis are only 1 inch, they get much bigger, just wait you'll see.

I had one school for over 6 years and never lost one, the biggest one got about 3 inches and the rest were around 2 , I had anthias for 2 years and the largest got up to 6 inches and the others got up to 5 this equals it to be larger than chromis , chromis don't eat shrimp anthias do, you can either have one anthias in a 90 or 6 chromis , cause there is no way you can have 1 male anthias and 7 females that is the ratio you should have think what you want

you are deff the first person i have ever talked to that had a school of chromis where they all lived. most only have 2-3 left after 3-5 years. "chromis don't eat shrimp anthias do" IDK my chromis school housed mysis and krill. no of course you couldnt put 8 anthias in a tank that small but 2 would be fine and possibly more if they were barletts or the other smaller one.

Could we get back to my question?

So Orchid Dottyback and Royal Gramma? Yes, No.

Dave

together or even in the picture in that tank? i dont think they would do well together.

Just trying to get things back on track;)

I think I eliminated the dottyback.

Would any wrasses work? I had a sixline in the past.

Dave

pretty much any reef safe wrasses will work some of the helirochious wrasses get a little big tho.

Are you going to have a top??

Yes, I bought a top because I was going to use a stock light fixture. I then changed my mind and built a canopy. I still have the top and keep it closed. It may keep out some oxygen but it does keep things in. I should get enough gas exchange through the skimmer and open basement sump.

So, jumpers should not be a problem.

Dave

Chromis....no matter how many I put in...I always ended up with three. I think that is the magic number.

Royal Gramma + Orchid Dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani)+red/orange spotted blenny (Istiblennius chrysospilos)
may have issues particularly the gramma and orchid..
