future stocking list

Once again I'm wanting to ask before taking the plunge. Will these fish work together and what size tank will ultimately be needed to house them long term?
dog face puffed
blue jaw trigger
male dwarf lion
female dwarf lion
possible undulated trigger

All the fish in question are currently 2-3 inches. I've seen a 125 being the repeated size for the trigger and puffed, but is that big enough or more then needed? Are there better or worse tank mates to consider?

get the undulated if you prefer 1 fish tanks, trust me....

i guess a 125 would be minimal for all those fish, but do yourself a favor and dont get the undy lol.

do you mean undulated instead of 'inch'? lol my undy at a YWG, LMB, Flame Angel ($75!!!) and a maxima plus caused a whitetip trigger to commit suicide-by-jumping.

Yep, spell check is great. I meant undulate. Im not looking for huge fish for all of them, just as long as they can get along. I watched the vid of the trigger tearing into the lion and I don't want that.
Is there a particular order for these fish to be introduced? Only one I can't find at the moment is the male dwarf lion. May have to order him in.

id let the lions get acclimated first, the puffer than bluejaw.

the triggers and the puffer will bully or pick on the lion.

i know people say that the calmer triggers are ok with lions. IMO its not a good idea

also if u put lions with fast swimmers they will not mover very much. they will stay sill.

in my lion cages the animals housed with them are very slow. eels and a marine betta.

my lions are out all the time begging for food.

at one point i had a clarkii clown in the same cage as one of the lions. the lion never moved. as soon as i sold the clown he came out all the time. he beg for food alot. so if u want an active lion choose tankmates accordingly.

now to the puffer.

i kept a small body toby puffer with my lions. the puffer got curious and nipper the fin of the lion. ate venom and died. thats my story

Do you have any actual personal experience with this or is this just second hand knowledge? I was thinking about adding a dwarf lion with my Sargassum after my 2 months of running the tank fallow.

i have NOT had personal experience with the triggers(my tanks are to small)

im no trigger expert by far. from what i have read from other peoples experience and questions i have asked and other s to. people say the docile ones like the blue jaw. the indian and a couple others i cant remeber the name of would be ok. From what i understand triggers are hit or miss.

Me personally? i would not risk it if i had a big enough tank.

if the trigger goes rouge no matter what kind of trigger the lion will always lose IMO

To calm anyones fears, I changed my plans a little. I still plans on having lions, trigger, and a puffer but they will occupy different tanks. Current in my possession, male dwarf lion, bluejaw trigger, and a dog faced puffer. Dwarf is seperate from the other two and constantly moving around begging. A pair or male and two females will go into a 40b wit a 40b sump. The trigger and puffer will in something like a 125 or larger. Trying to decide on a tank or larger plywood build for them. I also have found a green wolf eel, but don't currently have a tank with a tight enough lid to keep it from escaping.

DoubleM I watched the vid on triggers and lions and that is what changed my mind for the most part. Thanks for the opinion too though, any advise helps for long term health and happiness.

well thats good. im glad to here. yes all eels need a heavier lid on the tank to prevent escaping. i have 2 eels over 3 tanks and one has mad it into the sump lol. i got him out and hes ok but it was scary for me.

Well, the green wolf eel isn't really an eel, it's actually a member of the dottyback family. I don't know if they are as escape-prone as eels. Maybe Lisa D will see this - she's kept one for many years.

i know that the are not true eels. most people including myself for sometime thought of them as eels untill educated myself a little bit.

i have read peoples threads on them eating peoples fish and what not. i have also heard a few stories they have jumped. people say they can prepell themselfs very well.

after watching mine in the tank i can see that is possible. they seem to have very good controll over where they are going. so i can beleive they could be good jumpers. my ghost eel is a very clumsy swimmer. i have hadhim for 4 months now. those are just some observations over the time of owning the animals.

Well as my luck would have it, I found about three white spots on my trigger tonight. I will watch tomorrow and see if any more show up. Positive note, I fed krill tonight and they ate like crazy!

Now if it does turn out to be ich I will probably treat them together as they are both now infected. Will both the trigger and puffer handle cupramine? I plan on a large water change, then start dosing at intervals till I reach the. 5 level.

The puffer is EXTREMLY sensative to copper. Most people with puffers prefer hypo.

That is what I needed to know. Guess I will have to set another QT up like original plans were and hypo him. No biggie, just didn't want the stress added in if not needed. Guess I know my plans for tomorrow night now.

Well tonight threw a huge wrench in my plans. Got home from work and found my dwarf lion had jumped.
Looked over at the QT with the puffer and trigger and found a milky white tank. Ran to get ten gallons of water for a change and started draining the QT. Found the trigger in a pvc tube, and the puffer in a different one. Both dead. Also found that the filter had stopped runnng. Either ammonia built up or oxygen ran out, maybe a combination of both. I don't know.

So im draining the QT, new filter, refilling, and lids on everything.

I stopped by the lfs for filters and talked about fish to replace. Should have a yellow belly dog face coming wednesday. They also have two fu manchu coming in. I have a pick at one of them. Are they compatible, and would they work with a green wolf eel too?

That sux about your tank...altho fuzzies can and do jump (even for no good reason), I suspect that this time it was due to the water chemistry. Trust me, if you keep a fuzzy dwarf, cover the tank. It may take years, but the chances are good that it will end up on the floor eventually.

As for the fu manchu...they're harder to wean than most lions, so at the very least, you'll want to condition/wean it in its own setup. I don't recommend keeping a fu with an Arothron sp. puffer as it will likely suffer from food competition, and possible harassment from the puffer. 20 years ago, once my Arothron got some size on it, it decided that every fish in the tank looked tasty, so I got rid of it.

When my tank got ich my dogface puffer had it really bad. I decided to go with cupramine to treat it. I dosed slowly up to the full dose and he took the copper like a champ. After 2 days of it he looked so much better and acted much more like himself. I dont know if i was just luky but he responded very well to cupramine.
