Galaxea troubles

Old School Reef Keeper
I have a Galaxea that has been in my setup for almost 2 years. It has gone through some rough times and not sure it has ever been happy no matter where it is in the tank.

About 6 months ago some of the tissue started receeding and I thought I was doomed to watch it die slowly. I moved it yet again, and over the past 2 months some of the heads began to slowly recover and I have noticed some nice tissue growth.

three days ago, the Galaxea suddenly started melting down head by head. Close to 15 heads have melted practically over night. Everything else in the tank seems to be fine so far.

Can anyone tell me the magic formula for making a happy Galaxea? I hope this is not the begining of the end...

The only new additons to my reef are the frags I got from the C-Sea frag workshop and none of them are anwhere near this coral. I am pretty confident that the new additions are not the problem, they seem to be very happy and I am amazed at the new growth on them after only a month.

Thanks in advance for your help.

One idea came to mind, should I frag a chunk off the side that is not melting yet and separate it from the dying tissue? Would I stand a better chance of saving something?

What are your parameters (PH, Calc, Alk)?

The only time mine was ever in trouble was when all of the above were way low.

It looks like I need to be better about monitoring CA and Alk now that my coral load is getting heavier.

I tested this morning before the lights came on:
ALK = 2.0 meq/L
CA = 330 PPM

These levels are after I did the 30% water change last night. Wonder how low they were before the change?:eek1:

I alternate dripping kalk and using Kent buffer part 1 and 2. I either drip Kalk at night or add 8 ml of kent parts 1 or 2. The key is to test each week and fall into a routine or pattern depending on your tank size and inhabitants. Once you fall into this pattern, you don't have to test as much and spend more time enjoying your tank.
