Gary's in Maumee closed?

Hi guys,

I tried to call Gary's today in maumee to find out the number has been disconnected. I ended up later reading in a forum that someone mentioned that he closed up. This seemed pretty sudden and is anyone else aware of this or why he went out of business? He's been around a while.

He said the economy is terrible and he was barely breaking even. He said it was time after 17yrs.

Thats too bad, he was around for so long.

Yeah, they mentioned in the forum thread I read that he had 50% off everything in the store including fish and tanks, but it was only for a few days and then he closed. Wish I would have knew about this. I guess this leaves Salty Critter as the only place for me to go.

I read 20% off and $1 per gallon for the display tanks.

Does that leave a reputable place (real LFS) left in Toledo or NW Ohio?

Dont forget about the Coral Reef on sylvania ave. They always have a nice selection of fish and coral and they are family owned and go out of there way to help you.

I have had nothing but bad luck with that place. From high prices to sick fish to being bold face lied to and costing me over 2 hrs worth of driving and gas for nothing, I will never do business with that place again. I'm shocked that Gary went out before that place.

I had a whole thing typed out but I will just leave it with what I already said.

The first time I went to the Coral Reef, I liked it, Good Experience. Then I was calling around bc I was wanting to add Scarlet Reef Hermit crabs to my tank and I didn't feel like driving to Sea 2 Sea in Holgate to get them. I called the Coral Reef and they told me they had them for 10.99 ea. Haven't went back.

Sucks about Garys, Went there several times.

I have only been there a few times, have called them many times they have been very helpful over the phone when I was getting started. Havent made any major purchases there and I am thinking I wont either. Thanks for the heads up.

The first time we went there they had 1 stalk of xenia for $40...

That's OK... Jacks had three on a rock for $80 the other day. Them and PSP can kiss my behind.... Guess it's Phishy's for me from now on.

Ocean Treasures always has.. or had nice stuff, I haven't been there for a while, dunno if it's still there. They were always really pricy and actually have been in business for quite a while. I'd buy stuff from them if I had enough money. The place is really tiny too.

I bought a tank from a guy around the corner from Tropical Reef and stopped in on the way home, apparently a new guy had recently bought the place according to the story on previous threads here. Horrible customer service, at least that day for me and the prices were beyond belief as well. Some of the locals said then he had actually been buying supplies for resale from other LFSs in the area IO was around $70.

Coral Reef used to have nice inventory and I've actually bought some things there, not much equipment but I had them order a couple things because the prices were good. Livestock has always been very pricy.

Trilby's just added salt water to their inventory about a year ago, they have a lot of fresh water too, their tanks are set up similar to Gary's, prices weren't too bad and they had some supplies. Lot's of tanks but limited livestock. This and Ocean Treasures are the best of the 4. The others I'll probably never go back to...

Given my choice I'll drive the extra hundred miles for the round trip and go to Phishy's in Columbus...
