gate valve

i see that people are using gate valves for their return line, my question is that are they using the brass ones or are there a pvc type or something, or should i just use a ball valve i was just thinking that the gate valve will give me a little more and easier adjustment, anythoughts?

i'm sure that you'll need to use a pvc gate valve....anything less would be uncivilized :-)

I'm not sure, but in general you want to avoid any metal in your tank that didn't come from an reliable aquarium source or was part of a piece of equipment designed to go in the water, like a Ti heater...

thats kinda what i was thinking but do they make plastic gate valves? i have seen a waste water gate valve but i dont think thats what they are using

Yes they make all PVC gate valves. My local hardware store carries them.

If I ever build another system, I will try to use gate valves exclusively.

Ball Valves can stick, and are very hard to adjust in small increments.

Yes gate valves do allow you to fine tune the flow.

You do not want to use brass at all in your tank. It contains copper which will kill your inverts plus it can corrode from the salt water. Avoid any use of metal in a tank.

I got my pvc ones from savko.com

You need to be sure the gate valves you get do not have an exposed metal shaft, as some do. If you make one side of the handle on you ball valves longer, they will be much easier to operate and make smaller adjustments.

The online sources are great. If you can find them locally though, they will likely be much cheaper. I picked up my 1" for a little less than $10 locally. It would have been $20+shipping online.

yeah im going to take a look at some local plumbing stores to see if i can find it cheaper but atleast i know their out there now, thanks again

i live in ohio and the perferred plumbing supplier is savko in columbus ohio. nice people, good prices and great selection. i eventually ripped out all my ball valves and replaced them with gate valves. gate valves are more expensive but in the long run they pay for themselves.

I know this thread is old but I just ordered a 1 1/4" gate valve from ACE Hardware for about $12. I think it was supposed to be in tomorrow, so about three days delivery time to the store. 1 1/2" was in stock for $14 and I didn't price the 1". They were the only ones in town including the two supply houses and the one plumber I know with any PVC gate valves.
