Gauging Interest - GFO Group Buy?

Would anyone be interested in pursuing a bulk purchase of GFO?
I have a contact at a large water purification company that would be willing to sell us 30lb buckets of lab grade GFO media for around $360 (shipped). For the math impaired, that breaks down to $12/lb .

This is the exact same material that is used in municipal water treatment plants.

Anyway, I thought I'd throw it out there...let me know if you think that this is worth pursuing.

You may want to check and see if Steve (funman1) still has a bunch from the last GB before ordering more.

hmm, i thought that I heard that that stuff was gone...but yeah, i should double check with him first. thanks.

well, if anyone's interested let me know and we'll see if we get enough interest to warrant ordering a 30lb bucket.

by the way, I won't be making a dime off of this buy if it happens; so this is NOT a business. this is just an attempt by a frugal reef-geek to keep his expenses down and help out a few friends in the process. I won't be selling it, I'd be splitting it...

Make sure you get the pellets...
I loved that stuff Mike had.

Yeah the stuff Mike had is LONG gone.... :(

LMK if you need my packaging and labeling services..

I hate to ask this question, but what are you using this for?
Water treatment facilities are required to meet the MCL/MCLG's for heavy metals.

Steve, it's granular not pelletized, and was designed for use in the large scale GFO reactors used by water treatment plants. as far as I'm aware, the only benefit of the pelletized version is that it is less likely to clump (if subjected to too low of a current, which in turn would not create the desired "tumbling" effect), and it is less likely to release "fines" (GFO dust) into the water column. However, the consensus seems to be that granular GFO has a greater overall surface area than pelletized GFO, and is therefore considered a more effective media.

for what it's worth, IMO not all GFO is created equal. there are huge variances in size, shape and uniformity of product. there are also industrial grades and lab grades of the product. personally, I'd prefer to use the cleanest and most uniform version of the product available.

and lastly, Steve if we do end up doing this, I would gladly and appreciatively accept any and all help that you could provide with packaging and/or distribution. Thanks!

Jon, can we get a sample first so we know how fine this stuff is? I wouldn't want anything finer than what Mike B. picked up for us. The specs say 10x35 mesh for the particle size: I have no idea what that means.

If the particle size is good, I'm in for 2 pounds.

Will you be able to get this stuff on a regular basis?

That's about standard GFO size that you would get. I agree the last batch was easier in terms of size and stray particulates, but like Shively said, this is much more efficient due to surface area. Same holds true for GAC.

nope, don't think i'll be able to get a sample of the stuff beforehand...this quantity is so small for them that they're definitely not dying to do business with us. In fact, they'd be doing me a favor by selling it direct.

So you think the stuff Jon is suggesting is finer than Mike's stuff?

Yes, 10x35 is comparable to standard Phosban you'd buy at the store. Which in comparison was probably a 1/3 smaller than the pellets Mike offered.
