Gem Tang

The price is higher in the LFS because like I said they send you other fish along with the GEMs. Most LFSs won't receive a direct shipment from Mauratius but the wholesaler will. In return the wholesaler can't move a $40 butterfly for the $100 they paid for it. So that butterfly goes out at its normal price or slightly higher with the Mauratius tag on it. The difference in price is thrown on top of the Gem tang. That's how they offset the prices of the other fish. Also a Lfs in NY brought in 4 gems in one shipment last month, those are were the other two small ones were that I mentioned that were under the previously posted sizes by another member. I wish people would really do their homework before they comment or try to disprove my comments. That alone makes 3 Gem Tangs in a 25 mile radius that were all 2" and under. Yet only two were collected in that size range? That's three in a small piece of the US and doesn't include any other countries that got them in.

I know of a person in N. Florida that got one a week ago. He paid $2500 for the gem and a red carpet anemone together.

I was revering to what I know was collected in South Africa. The number just got 3 small gems for SA
Small gems are rare in South Africa

Airfreight from anywhere to the US is expensive. I can get rates to HKG under $1 per kg w/o fuel & security surcharges but to get it here from HKG is over $4 a kg.

Beautiful fish that's for sure! They are cheaper than I thought they would be. I thought I would have to try the starfish trick on my liver to buy one eventually.

Wow that's cheap, livestock is $10/kg + to aus.

there are other places that collect gems besides Mauritius (madagascar for one) the numbers are still small, but are pricier out of Madagascar.

Dejong's marine life gets Gems more than anyone else i've seen. Shipping is MUCH cheaper to EU than to US from Mauritius, so most of their fish go there instead for the simplicity. Just like black tangs are much cheaper in the states than in EU since Hawaii is closer !

Its all relative to where you live. Freight plays a MAJOR role in prices.. its over 30$ a fish landed in HNL from Mauritius, so when you have to pay that on top of other fish costs (something that might retail for 30$) you start losing money quickly.

JAA - i dont feel the need to brag about what i do. I only tell people i wholesale when they question me on something i do for a living. lol

Information should be shared in this industry more. People try to keep secrets on where fish are prices etc, and it only hurts the industry. If everyone understand why prices are the way they are and how hard some of these fish are to get, there would be less threads like this one...

You can research until you're blue in the face, but until you actually go through the motions of importing and exporting, you really have no idea what its like (this is not directed towards anyone specific)

The price I was given and actually had paper work for was 1300 apiece. Shipped to Newark airport, but if we didn't get 10 gems other things had to be ordered. Some were fish that you can buy for 30-50 bucks but would have costed us 100-200 on the same fish. I had 9 people ready to go and couldn't find a tenth. In the meantime 3 people backed out, and as soon as the info of not getting 10 of them and we had to order other fish that pushed a few others away. What happens if ten people put their money in and 8 Gems come in?

Goodluck wiz ur Magic number 10

I think its nick name is "Hoover" or "Dyson" because its sucks up everything in sight.
That's the kind of fish I like to see, one that likes to eat.

Lately i have been looking at photos of gems
And not all the gems have the same mouth shape
I think Mauritius gems have a longer mouth
