Gem Tang

Hello

Has anyone dealt with MHLLE with a GT? I am not sure what is going on with this fish. Some folks say it is HLLE. Others say it is just stress. In meantime, I have shut carbon off and I am feeding it aggressively. The fish is eating and it appears to be getting better daily. I removed all fish that bother it. Take a look at pick and let me know what you think this is. Does this look like HLLE?

Just to clarify it holds it stress color all time

Looks like HLLE to me. Just like my Lavender gets sometimes. Soak all you food in selcon it should take just a couple weeks to turn around. My lavender had it pretty bad, but after feeding good soaked food he has no scarring.

Can you give some spec/parameters on your system?

EDIT: Also age of fish, how long you have had it, etc.

The fish is in a 300 gallon reef parameters are all in check. The fish was harassed by a black tang for about a week. The black tang kind of pushed gem into a corner. Black tang has been removed. I have carbon turned off for about 4 days
No other tank mates bother fish. It is eating I am soaking foods in omega vitamin.
I think it is getting better.
Is Hlld due to carbon or did it happen from stress by black tang
Not sure
I will keep thread informed of progress

Stress can cause all sorts of problems that were never present before. My LFS sold a orange shoulder to my friend for his 375 reef and the fish was immediately harassed and pinned in a corner. The fish was caught and brought back to the LFS and now is covered in ich a barely eating. The day before the fish at like a pig and didnt have a spot on him. Vitamin enriched food is a good idea, maybe try selcon and some vita chem or Zoe in addition to what you are currently using

There are alot of causes they believe for HLLE. I don't know about carbon. I run carbon 24/7 and 2 of my tangs have never shown symptoms. I think its a stress disorder.

that doesnt look like errosion to me, it just looks like skin color change, which can easily be from stress, can you verify that it actually looks like a dent or that some tissue is missing or sunken? i would think if it were HLLE that you wouldnt clearly see the spots on the lighter tissue. you can see them really clearly in this picture.

The Toledo Zoo did an anecdotal study using carbon with tangs that found a positive relationship (not conclusive work) but the systems were much more like real world tanks rather than isolated. (not to say that the tanks were linked to each other but that they had live rock and other critters in those tanks as well)

Their "feeling" was that the carbon dust was the problem where by some folks using pellets did not have issues and others did

I never run any carbon on my systems for that reason.

I am not trying to say that stress is not an issue too or even that its not THE cause here but my mind takes me to carbon right away

Carbon has been off for about five days. Fish does seem to be getting better. Hard to say if it is the carbon or the fact that I am feeding it a lot of vitamin rich diverse foods. The fish loves see weed the most.

I rescued a yellow tang that had a very bad case of hole in head. The original owner got very sick with cancer and their adult daughter started caring for the fish by feeding only brine shrimp (advice of the local pet store)

fed a lot of the veggies (three algae types and Rods foods herb blend) so there was meats and veggies

it took months but the fish came around. sorry to say that I lost a long time friend to the C word but her fish pressed on healthy

The Gem is doing much better ::beer:
I have been feeding it see weed three times a day. It loves to graze. Never seems to get enough. I apologize for the poor quality photo. The weird marking are going away.
Of note, I stopped in a local fish store yesterday. They have a 10 inch Gem one of the biggest I have ever seen in a 15 or 20 gallon tank. The fish has the same markings my Gem is getting over. This leads to believe I was dealing with a stress /diet related issue.

If you're comfortable sending me (PM) your eMail, I can send you a photo of a huge Gem with spots exactly like yours. I can't do it thru RC.

I never had a gem specifically, but a good portion of diet from NLS pellets cleared up HLLE in many tangs in my care. The flakes are good too, just messier.

Nice fish. Well done.

I was at a LFS in North Jersey today. I saw a fairly large Gem for sale with the same markings. I remembered this post and thought it was this particular fish that got returned. You most likely know the lfs I'm referring to. They had it up for 3500, I know where much nicer ones are for less money.

Yes the newer of the two stores we are talking about is in my opinion so much better than this lfs that is selling the gem for 3500. I was in this store late one night and i caught the manager training some snot nosed kid how to sell. I am all for making a buck but this was downright wrong and disgusting. He basically told the kid to keep pushing products on customers until you get every last dime out of every customer.

IMO that place operates on pure greed. They are not hobbiests. just out to milk the dollar $$. Funny how people just go back for more.

I do t really even like going there but I was in the area yesterday and figured it has been over a year since my last visit. Well it was the same old song and dance at that place. They use to be one of my favorite stores in the 90's, but they have since changed. They have a fake skull with GSP on the top and they are charging 80 bucks for it, it also includes some aptasia.

What a bargin apitasia for 80 bucks....wow that is a great deal. For a bonus maybe one of the twenty high school kids just standing around in a black tee shirts can try to sell me some stuff I really don't need.

That place has gone down hill. I stay away from them and try not to go in there anymore
