Genicanthus semifasciatus changing. Documented with pictures.

Wrasse junkie
Hey all of you fish junkies out there I am happy to announce that my trio of female Genicanthus semifasciatus are expecting a male soon. After much bickering and chasing my most dominant female is starting to display male characteristics of dimorphia . "She " has started to develop the male yellow mask that they are synonymous with. He has also developed the lunate caudal fin that makes this Genus so special with the sweeping streamers.

Pictures to follow after dinner.

LOL.... "documented with pictures" maybe shouldn't have been in the thread title... :D

This is pics of the male.

Can definitely see the yellow coming through in the nose. Keep a good photographic journal! Will be interesting to see how far the change goes...

Reefjunkie, did you get all three angels at the same time? How long have you had them together in the same tank?

Looking great!!! Was this a trio that came from DD or did you source them elsewhere? Also, could you tell us if you QT'd them? It seemed many people were having some trouble with them.

Also, I'd love to hear a little more about the system and tankmates.

no Qt, and im paying for it. hard to tear down the rockwork to run hypo for these beauts and a few others. better safe than sorry. I have them in a 200 gal with fairy, and flasher wrasses. As well as a few others but mainly wrasses. I didnt get these from DD. They are well established and eating like pigs. Im very happy heres an update. its amazing looking at the fish each day and seeing the suttle changes in patten and color.

I know this is an old thread but any updates of the changing male? Or anyone have any info on the length of time it takes to change?

I have two females at the moment they have already their pecking order established. Want to see other Genicanthus semifasciatus owners post some their experience and maybe some pics. :)

I've had various Genicanthus angels turn to male colors in a few weeks, and even have noticeable growth in that same time.

Thanks for the response. I've had my face pressed up against the glass for days now watching these two behave and for any possible change. When they finally make the switch Ill be taking pics to document.
I've been waiting for a pair of these guys for ages. And when I got the text at 2AM from my LFS owner that he has 6 of them in stock, I was more than happy to say yes! But I get first pick, ha ha.
Even let me leave the fish in their quarantine system for a while until both ate and clear of any disease. I wasn't taking any chances. So far all is well and eating like champs.
