Geoff’s 380G/190G dual Reef/FOWLR systems

Bummer - Just found out that my powder coater guy can't so the job on the frames. His sandblaster unit is not large enough to handle the prep work.

Any other suggestions about coating the metal frames other than powder coating.... I've heard some use Rhino-liner (pickup truck bed liner), but this strikes me a maybe being too thick. I'd really like to get a nice durable, and rust free, coating on these frames.

Thanks as always for your ideas

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

I coated my stand for my 300 in a product called por-15. Its a rust preventative paint that is like powder coating in a can. You can spray it or brush it with foam brushes. I've used it in automotive applications for over 100 plus panels and never had a rust through. With proper application it can fill rust holes in sheet metal. Check it out www.por15.com.

Mike (HarrsCars) thanks for the tip. I haven't heard of this stuff before. I've checked out the link that you provided. Thanks.

From the name and other info, it looks that there is a ceramic binder or component to the paint. Since the steel that I have been using is cold-rolled cabon steel (with a layer of carbon on the surface) what would be your suggestions for preping the surface.... I'd really like to try to avoid sandblasting if possible. BUT,..... oh well, what ever.

Also, do I need to buy it over the internet? Other sources?

Mike, thanks again,

Geoff

Geoff, You can usually find this at any auto paint store. Its about 5 to 7 more a quart. The metal spray prep that is with the system I would use if you had rust as this helps to prep the bond so to speak. Since all your metal is new wipe it down (twice) once to get the tooling oil off it and once to clean it. You can get a cleaner degreaser at the same paint store and use that.

Be aware once you open the can buy those neat little plastic clip in pour spouts. That will keep the por-15 off the edge. Once you put the lid one and it cures forget trying to take it off and poke a hole in it if its left in the edge. Also its a good idea to use all of it within a week or if it gets air in the can it turns into a indestructible hockey puck. Kinda cool if you take a plastic cup pour in whats left and let it harden. Goes on smooth with brush or great to spray(dont forget to strain it if you spray) and a little will do a lot. You will use brush on quart and a pint for two coats. Spray is more due to waste in spray fan.

Good luck send pics.

Mike,
Sounds like cool stuff. Thanks for the tips. I'll post some pics when I get the frame painted. I've also been restoring a 1960 wooden sailboat and have been having problems with an epoxy coating staying on the steel centerboard... This stuff sound like just the ticket.

Thanks again,

Geoff

Big Day Tomorrow

Big Day Tomorrow

Well, tomorrow is a big day. The powder coater called and all of the cabinet frames and tank stand are ready to pick up. Also, the order for the tank is going to be placed with AGE. All I have to do is figure out the closed loop design, for the hole placement, and the countdown begins!

Now I'm getting excited!!

Back from Powdercoater!!

Back from Powdercoater!!

Finally some progress. I picked up the cabinet frames and the tank stand from the powder coater. They did a great job (covered up a lot of my mistakes).

Edward,

Risktaker???? You were my inspiration!:D

minireefer - welcome. It was good to see you the other day at George's. I hope you'll tag along when the tank arrives... we'll need a lot of hands to move the thing.

BTW, she is VERY understanding. Upon discussing the logistics of moving all of the livestock out of the existing display and into the temporary holding storage tank, she has offered to move out of her "office" (fish room) and take over the spare bedroom as her new office. It only cost me a new computer. LOL

rayman - welcome. Glad to have you along for the ride. It should be getting interesting soon.
